Think the Business of Pets Conference isn’t for you?

Think again.

The UK pet industry is changing fast, and the businesses that thrive will be the ones investing in fresh ideas, stronger networks, and better leadership. That’s exactly why the Pet Industry Federation’s Business of Pets Conference is taking place this week at Cranfield, near Milton Keynes.

The programme is packed with practical insight and expert advice, including sessions on achieving prompt payments with Small Business Commissioner Emma Jones, scaling from founder to CEO with Emma Barnes, and understanding the unfair advantage SMEs have with Martin Spiller. You’ll also hear from leading voices across the sector, take part in innovation pitches showcasing the latest ideas in pet care, and have plenty of opportunities to network with fellow professionals.

The UK now has one major conference dedicated to pet businesses, bringing together industry leaders, experts, and colleagues from across the sector to explore how we build more resilient businesses and where the UK pet market is heading next.

But it’s not just about learning.

It’s about meeting old friends, making new connections, sharing experiences, and being part of the conversations that shape the future of our industry. That’s why our informal evening BBQ is always one of the highlights of the event.

I know taking two days out of the business can feel difficult. But sometimes the most important thing you can do for your business is step away from it for a moment and invest in new ideas, new perspectives, and new relationships.

Ticket applications close on Monday evening, so if you’re thinking about attending, now is the time to secure your place.

Time to think again!
Your business needs you. But you might be surprised what two days away from it can do.

The Business of Pets is a conference built for pet professionals who want to think differently, work smarter and meet others who work in this industry and face similar problems to you.

No selling. No pointless sessions. Just thoughtful conversations, a fresh perspective, and the space to ask the questions you never normally have time for.

We even have quiet rooms, so if you need to keep one eye on things back home, you can.

Right in the middle of the UK, nr Milton Keynes. Two days. A room full of people who understand exactly what you're dealing with.
Still not sure you can spare the time? You might be surprised what you come back with.

Most pet business owners I speak to are working incredibly hard. Long hours. Tight margins. Real passion.

And yet many are still making major business decisions in the dark. Without reliable market insight. Without clarity on where consumers are heading next and without a network that truly understands the pressure

This industry is full of talented people who deserve better than guesswork.

That’s why the Business of Pets Conference on 3-4 June at Cranfield matters.

This year’s programme is the strongest we’ve ever put together:

• NielsenIQ on the real state of UK pet spending• PwC on the future consumer outlook• Emma Barnes on scaling Linnaeus Group from 8 to 150+ practices• The Pooch & Mutt digital growth story• Live Innovation Award pitches• AI, cyber security, funding, networking, and the conversations that only happen when the industry gets in the same room and gets together to network at an informal BBQ.

This isn’t a conference for people who have all the answers. It’s for people curious enough to keep learning, adapting, and growing.

If that sounds like you, we would genuinely love to see you

There is an important issue currently being looked at by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate around flea and tick treatments and it could have wider implications for pet businesses and owners.

The focus is on environmental impact, but any changes to how these products are supplied could affect:

1) how easy it is for owners to access treatments
2) where they go for advice
3) what happens when pets aren’t treated effectively

From groomers and boarders dealing with untreated pets, to retailers supporting owners every day, this is something that affects the whole sector.

The Pet Industry Federation is gathering feedback from members to help represent real-world experiences and concerns.

If you’re a PIF member, please take a few minutes to complete your survey. You will have received one this week and you will get a reminder later this week. We need your input!

There’s also an opportunity for anyone to share their views directly with the VMD:

There's a trap almost every growing pet business falls into.
You're so busy working in the business that you have no time to work on it. Every decision comes back to you. Every problem needs you to solve it. Growth stalls - not because the market isn't there, but because you've become the bottleneck.

Sound familiar?

Emma Barnes is joining us at the Business of Pets Conference with a session designed specifically for this moment: From Founder to CEO - the systems and mindset required to scale.

Emma helped grow the Linnaeus Group from 8 practices to over 150. She knows exactly what it takes to transition from the person who does everything to the leader who builds the systems that do it instead.

You'll leave with practical frameworks, the right mindset shifts, and a clearer picture of what the next stage of your business actually looks like.

Being small isn't a disadvantage. Most pet business ownrers just haven't been shown how to use it yet.

Martin Spiller is back on the Business of Pets stage - and if you've seen him before, you'll know this one's not to miss.
Former Senior Lecturer at Cranfield and now MD at Palladin Partners. And someone with a rare talent for delivering the kind of session that genuinely shifts how you see your business.

His talk - The Unfair Advantage of SMEs - flips the traditional growth conversation completely.
Big businesses have budgets. You have speed, authenticity, and the ability to make decisions today that a corporate won't approve until Q3 or the following year!
Martin will show you how to weaponise that - using agility, storytelling, culture, and data to out-manoeuvre competitors that are ten times your size.
This is the kind of session that gives you a new lens for everything that comes after.
