Don’t miss this fantastic new exhibition at the Globe Gallery in North Shields.

‘MOURNING TEA TYNE & LOST FREQUENCIES’ - by CHRISTOPH AND SEBASTIAN MÜGGE

This evocative exhibition explores the imagined home of a fictional person who has died. Through domestic objects, forgotten collections, old photographs, handwritten notes, souvenirs, household oddities and everyday clutter, the artists have created an installation that reflects on memory, grief, dementia and the traces we leave behind.

It also considers the objects we keep after someone has gone: the things that seem ordinary, funny, strange or even embarrassing, but which can carry deep personal meaning.

Based in Malmö, Sweden, brothers Christoph and Sebastian Mügge have exhibited extensively across Europe and internationally, in galleries, museums and biennials across Germany, the Netherlands, South Korea, France, Sweden and the UK. It’s a real coup to have them here, at the Globe Gallery, in North Shields.

🦬 Where the Linskill Centre stands today … 🌵

Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show visited North Shields on Saturday, 23rd July 1904, performing for one night only on the fields at Brock Farm, close to where the Linskill Centre stands today. It must have been quite a spectacular parade, as the show travelled along Linskill Terrace towards the farm.

The Shields Daily News reported that "an army of workmen began their operations". Residents woke and looked out of their windows in astonishment, on seeing the whole field almost entirely covered by canvas and 'cowboys and Indians' rushing about "in the fulness of life and vigour, preparing for the matinée". The show featured thrilling enactments of the Battle of the Little Big Horn (Custer’s Last Stand), a hold-up of the Deadwood Stagecoach and trick riding.

William F Cody - better known as Buffalo Bill - came to the North East as part of a UK tour. Born in 1846 in what was then the lowa Territory, Cody claimed to have held several jobs in his early life including Pony Express rider and stagecoach driver.

In the 1860s he was contracted by the Kansas Pacific Railroad to supply buffalo meat for its workers. In the space of 18 months Cody is estimated to have killed 4282 buffalo, giving him his nickname ‘Buffalo Bill'. His showbusiness career began in the 1870s with his world-famous Wild West Shows. Sitting Bull, Calamity Jane and Annie Oakley all worked for Cody, although none of them made it as far as North Shields.

If you visit the Linskill Centre, make sure to take a look at Conrad Milne’s beautiful artwork - North Shields: 800 Years in the Making - which has recently been installed there.

The seven panels have previously been exhibited at Three Tanner’s Bank and in North Shields library, and they’ve now arrived at their permanent home in the Linskill Centre, on the wall that faces the Northumbria WW1 Memorial Garden.

Covering 800 years of North Shields history, the fascinating panels also include poetry by Dean Jolly and photography by Hazel Plater Photography.

There’s a ‘meet the artist’ event with Conrad Milne at the Linskill Centre on Monday 13th July, 6-7pm. Tickets are free but need to be booked in advance as spaces are limited:

Happy birthday 🎂 to Stan Laurel, born on 16th June 1890 in Ulverston, Lancashire, but 'made' in North Shields, where he spent much of his boyhood.

Stan had very happy memories of growing up here - and local people gave him an enthusiastic welcome on his occasional visits back home.
[The photo is of Stan visiting his old home in Dockwray Square, in 1932].
