Remembering The Past

Remembering The Past Our Story:

Hidden away in the minds of people all over North Tyneside are fascinating memories of life throughout the twentieth century.

Remembering the Past is a volunteer led charity which collects and manages a digital collection of stories, sound recordings and memorabilia which reflect every aspect of local life in North Tyneside since the turn of the twentieth century. Remembering the Past was set up in 1997 by North Shields Library Club as a means of meeting the need for innovative and engaging responses to the issues around

loneliness and social isolation of older people which had been identified in North Tyneside at that time. In particular, the founders wanted to address the common fear of digital technology, using the collection of memories and life experiences as their method of engagement. We are passionate about encouraging people to realise how important their life experience is and how it can add a vibrant context to what could be just bare facts. We feel strongly that this is the way to give local communities a voice and a presence in the telling of the area’s history.

Today is day, designed to raise awareness of and take action against ageism. We were delighted to work with and Stephenson Memorial Primary School on an intergenerational event designed to challenge tired stereotypes about older and younger people. After some fun games to get to know each other, the students had the opportunity to have a go at interviewing … and found out some surprising and inspiring facts about our older volunteers! A lovely morning for all involved.

Trees of Hope.
It was a proud moment for many, seeing a Sycamore Gap sapling taking pride of place at The Rising Sun Country Park yesterday. The tree was awarded to the Elemental Occupational Therapy project and will serve as a symbol of hope and remembrance for the bereaved.
We were honoured to be involved in the project ourselves in the form of storing and sharing a set of stories from bereaved persons in North Tyneside. The participants have been supported by the Elemental Occupational Therapy project and wanted to share what the tree means to them. The final results of this project will be available soon.

Looking back over the past year, 2025 was a busy year for us here at Remembering the Past. We continued our work on 'Women in Shipbuilding', focussing on the period from the second world war onwards and began a large project to coincide with the North Shields 800 celebrations. The year culminated in 2 exhibitions 'North Shields Voices' and 'Gannin Shoppin' in Shields to showcase our work as well as having our memories featured as projections during then fabulous North Shields 800 finale celebration.
Now as we look forward to what's in store for2026, it's already shaping up to be another exciting year for us. Several inspiring projects are already booked into the diary and work is already beginning!
Keep an eye on our socials for details of our upcoming projects and details of how to get involved!

Our latest blog post ‘In Memory of Ernest Story’ pays tribute to one of our longest serving volunteers. It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of Ernest Storey on 10th January 2026. Ernest’s role at Remembering the Past was that of Principal Photographer and while his involvement with RTP goes back 15 years or more, his photographs that feature throughout our memories and articles go back to the 1980s at least.
Ernest was regarded by all at Remembering the Past as a good friend as well as a colleague. He will be much missed and long remembered.

A tribute from Remembering the Past to Ernest Storey, one of its longest serving volunteers, who passed away 10 January 2025

In order to document 2025 for the future, Remembering the Past sent photographers Sasha Mallo Tardiveau (Insta .tardivography) and Hazel Plater (Hazel Plater Photography on Facebook) out to roam the town, as NS800 comes to a close. On their travels, they made street photography, environmental portraits and other documentary photography and we are showing the results as a 'social media takeover' this week. This is post 7 of 7. The photographs will also go into our physical and digital archives as a record of our times.
