Final meeting of the season and we’re looking forward to welcoming Ian Ratcliffe to talk to us about the “Right cow, Right place”.

Having moved to farm in North Devon from Sound, Nantwich, in 2013, Ian Ratcliffe (who farms together with wife Cath), runs a 380 cow, autumn block calving dairy business. The herd is averaging 8,500L and producing 730kg solids, being semi housed from the point of calving in autumn and over winter but paddock grazed hard in the spring/summer. They are focused on achieving high levels of health and welfare as well as farming sustainably and trying to be as self sufficient as possible. This presentation will focus on some of the key factors which they feel drive their system, including breeding and now genomics, fertility and heifer rearing as well as the value of cost of production benchmarking.

February Meeting - Driving profit in pasture based systems using your data with Dr Joe Patton from Teagasc. (Please note, we're back in the Lecture Theatre).

Joe Patton graduated from University College Dublin with a Degree in Agricultural Science in 2002. His research PhD was on ‘Influence of nutrition and energy balance on the reproductive function in dairy cattle’, which he completed between Teagasc and UCD.

He started his career in Teagasc in 2006 with a contract research post in the area of dairy herd nutrition. In 2009, he took up a role as dairy specialist for winter milk production in Teagasc, based at Teagasc Grange. He also took on responsibility for the Teagasc winter milk systems project based at Johnstown Castle. In 2020, he moved to the position of ruminant nutrition specialist in the organisation having previously taken a leading role in helping formulate and disseminate the Teagasc position in relation to managing responses to severe weather impacts in 2018. Since 2021 Joe has held the position of Head of Dairy Knowledge Transfer helping dairy farmers of Ireland and further afield exceed their goals.

Quick reminder of tonight's meeting with Hannah Batty from LLM Farm Vets

For this meeting only we'll be in University Centre, NOT the Lecture Theatre. Use entrance one as normal and park in the main car park. Walk up the path towards reception, carry on that path, with reception on your left until you get to a bike shelter, take your first left where you'll see some water heaters on your right. The entrance to the University Centre is straight in front of you through the double glass doors. Once you're in the University Centre, URC8 Lecture Theatre is the first door opposite the Christmas tree. Any problems, ring 07792289386. Look forward to seeing you there.

Last one of the year with Hannah Batty from LLM Farm Vets.

"People. Processes. Potential: A Blueprint for great team management on UK dairy farms".

Hannah wasn’t born into a farming family, however is fiercely passionate about the benefits of working within the UK dairy industry, having been welcomed in with open arms. Hannah is currently a farm animal vet and Clinical director, with LLM Farm Vets and truly believes in the importance of developing people within our industry and that defining and refining processes can benefit both cattle health and business profitability.
