Prenton Dell Claypit on Tour
Yesterday, Bill, Carol and Mike took part in the Wildabout Marine Eco-schools Day at the Thustaton Centre in Wirral Country Park. In spite of the rain, it was a lovely day and we got to work with over 100 youngsters from 10 different schools. It was also nice to catch up with students and staff who have attended previous events at the Claypit as well as being next to our friends from Wirral Fox Rescue.

Happy Snappers Camera Club at Prenton Dell Claypit
On Tuesday, we had a lovely visit from The Happy Snappers Camera Club. After coffee and cake, we took a tour of the Claypit to photograph the nature. Luckily, the sun had broken through and we were treated to many bugs and butterflies. This was followed by more cake and a brief history of the site. A really enjoyable afternoon was had by all. Some images from last Saturday taken by one of our volunteers, Robbie. Although he had been doing some hard graft in the morning, he couldn’t resist taking his camera down into the Claypit in the afternoon. We think that among them there are a Broad-bodied Chaser and a Small Red Damselfly, if anyone can confirm or correct we would be grateful.

Butterfly Conservation at Prenton Dell Claypit
On Saturday, 24 members of the Cheshire and Wirral branch of the Butterfly Conservation visited us. The day didn’t look promising in the morning as it was grey and overcast. Luckily, by 11.30 am the sun was out and so were the butterflies. Many of the group saw the target species (Dingy Skipper) for their first time and we were also treated to mating Small Copper, Small Heath, Blues, Speckled Wood, Orange Tips and more. The last picture is a Burnet Companion, a day flying moth. Thank you all for visiting, please come again.

Mike voted for the Small Heath. After voting he did the "What butterfly are you?" quiz and it turned out that he is a Small Heath. Obviously based on character and not size! (Said that before anyone else did)

A quick catch up
On Friday the sun came out as did the Dingy Skippers and Small Heath who were joined by our first Common Blue of the year.
On Saturday in a complete reversal of the weather, Prenton Dell Claypit had a stall at Cool Heswall. A really well organised event and although it was a shame about the weather, it was great to meet new people as well as some old pals.

They’re here!
Although our friend John had seen Dingy Skipper and Small Heath butterflies on Sunday, we wanted to see them for ourselves. So yesterday, Dave from Butterfly Conservation along with Sandra and Mike went in search. Although the conditions weren’t great, we saw Dingy Skippers in four locations and Small Heath in two. Although not uncommon, I couldn’t resist a shot of this Speckled Wood that was posing in the sunshine.

Two years on…….
Prenton Dell Claypit has just passed its second birthday and so much has happened in that time. For the volunteers that are here every week, it just seems like a gradual change and it takes a visitor to point out how much we have achieved.
The most visible signs are the new paths and boardwalks plus the improvements to Pond 1. But there is also the habitat work in opening up the meadow and removing invasive scrub.
And then there are all the surveys, events and activities that have introduced new people to our little gem.
If you haven’t visited us yet, the entrance to the site is through the Prenton RUFC Community Hub car park (What3words sang.riches.orders). If the car park is closed, you can just walk down the lane from Prenton Dell Road. However, if you would like a guided tour then contact us through this page.
A massive thank you to our own volunteers plus Fred and his Community Payback team, Hilary from Wirral Wildlife, Dave from Butterfly Conservation, everyone from Wirral Amphibian & Reptile Group (WiARG), Pete and Steve from Wirral Countryside Volunteers, Naomi our local councillor and Lynn from Eco-schools for being so supportive.

A bat walk as part of the City Nature Challenge
A big thank you to Anne and her team who came down to Prenton Dell Claypit on Sunday to carry out a bat survey as part of City Nature Challenge 2026. Results to follow. Whilst in the Claypit , we couldn’t resist a quick look in the ponds for newts. In one pond I counted 23 individual newts in 2/3 minutes. Exciting stuff.
