This Learning Disability Week, we’re reflecting on the words we use and why they matter.

At Minstead Trust, supporting people with learning disabilities remains a huge part of who we are. It is central to our history, our expertise and our work every day.

But as we prepare to share more about our new 10-year strategy, we also know our language needs to reflect the wider range of people we support now, and the people we hope to reach in the future.

That is why you may start to see us using the term neuro disabled people more often.

In a busy world, having a space to slow down, focus and create can make a real difference. For Matt, weaving offers exactly that.

At Crafted Earth Studios, makers with learning disabilities can spend time exploring traditional crafts and expressing themselves creatively.

‘…I like the feel of the clay. I feel happy because it’s my work.’

For Silas, it’s not just about ceramics. It’s about gaining confidence and feeling proud of what he can achieve independently.

That’s what Crafted Earth Studios is all about.

We want more people with learning disabilities to have the same opportunities through craft, but to make that happen, we need your support.

We’re aiming to raise £7,000 by 25 June. Every donation to Fair Shares helps fund the materials and support that make these opportunities possible. Whether it’s clay, glazing materials or pottery equipment, your support helps ensure makers like Silas can continue creating work they’re proud of.

Across Carers Week, we’ve been sharing what lifelong caring really looks like.

For families supporting someone with a learning disability, caring doesn’t stop. It continues across every stage of life, often alongside years of navigating systems and services.

We hear the same message from carers again and again: it can feel like they’re fighting to get the right support for their loved one.

We also hear from staff trying to work within complex rules and responsibilities. When these worlds don’t connect, it’s the person being supported who feels it most.

That’s why we’re working to bring families, carers and support teams closer together, so they can work with each other, not around each other.

We’re supporting carers to develop resources that help professionals better understand the reality of lifelong caring, while also creating more opportunities to share experiences and shape support together.

We’re looking forward to sharing more as this work develops.

When people talk about carers, the focus is often on the support they need. But lifelong carers also carry a huge amount of knowledge.

After years of appointments, paperwork, setbacks, problem solving and celebrating progress, carers know what works, what doesn’t, and what everyday life really looks like.

That experience matters.

In our BCP Family Carers Forum and Online Family Carers Community, carers come together to share ideas, speak honestly about challenges and help improve support for others.

Because the people living it every day should have a voice in shaping what better support looks like.

Did you know that hazel basket making is one of the traditional craft skills considered ‘at risk’?

It’s one of many heritage crafts that could disappear if they’re not practised or the skills passed on.

At Crafted Earth Studios, makers with learning disabilities are helping keep these important skills alive through workshops like Fibrecraft. Emma, who attends the workshop, says coming to the studio makes her feel ‘happy’ and she loves ‘seeing my friends.’

We still have a long way to go to reach our £7,000 Fair Shares target, and every donation helps fund the materials, tools and specialist support that make these opportunities possible. Thank you so much to everyone who has donated so far.
