Furzey Gardens

Furzey Gardens Furzey Gardens The gardens were planted out with a rare collection of Rhododendrons, trees and shrubs in the 1920s.
(574)

Having later fallen into disrepair the gardens were restored and placed into the care of a charitable trust (The Furzey Gardens Charitable Trust, registered number 271485) in the 1970s. Following this an art and craft gallery and tea-rooms were built and the gardens extensively replanted. It is recorded that more than £7,000 was spent on grubbing out the rough gorse and importing tons of good tops

oil before putting in often rare rhododendrons and azaleas. Other notable plants include many Embothrium coccineum, the tender and spectacular Chilean fire bushes that present a fantastic picture in May, their spidery, scarlet tubular flowers blazing with colour. Many acid-loving trees such as the tall eucryphias, of which there are several species, all with pure white, scented flowers from late July, were also planted, as were bulbs and plants which largely look after themselves, such as foxgloves; wild strawberries, anemones and little orchids.

This volunteer week we say a massive thank you to our volunteers who are such an important part of Furzey Gardens. From serving in the tea room and welcoming visitors to keeping the gardens looking great we simply could not do what we do without you! Last year over 50 volunteers contributed over 7000 hours to making Furzey the special place that it is.

Thank you!

Our cornus collection are putting on quite a display at the moment.

These flowering dogwoods have large petal-like bracts surrounding tiny green flowers.

Our records show that we have a specimen of Cornus kousa var. chinensis that dates back to 1934.
In the autumn the dark green leaves give lovely autumn colour and strawberry like fruits.

Happy Bank Holiday Monday! We hope you have been enjoying the sunshine.

Plants bring us so much joy and we all have our favourites. So we thought we'd share these beauties with you! Chosen by Ryan, one of our supported gardeners, these lupins are putting on a bright and colourful display in the cottage garden.

Ryan told us 'I chose these lupins, they are my favourite plant.' We can see why Ryan!

Tell us your favourite plants in the comments below.

Visiting us this bank holiday? Don't forget pre-booking your garden entrance is essential to help us keep Furzey Gardens a calm and welcoming space. Afternoons are often a quieter time to visit. www.furzey-gardens.org

Galactic Furzey officially lands 23 May!🚀

This week we celebrated lift off with the artists, people we support, volunteers and teams who helped bring this year’s trail to life.

This year's Galactic Furzey trail is our most inclusive, collaborative trail yet, with people with learning disabilities involved at every stage of the journey. From designing curious creatures and building mysterious portals to painting, creating and installing the trail across the gardens, it has all been powered by creativity, collaboration and imagination.

Now, the mission is ready for new explorers until 31 August.

Step through five portal worlds, discover strange creatures and search for the cosmic energy needed to help power the journey home.

🚀 Prebooking your visit is essential during half term to keep Furzey a calm and welcoming place to explore!
✨ Purchase the trail booklet at the entrance for £3.50.

📡 Incoming transmission…

Attention Explorers.
Our readings show that your rocket ship energy levels are critically low, and a nearby woodland planet has been identified as a possible recharging point.

Something strange has been appearing around the gardens…

Mysterious portals are opening to distant worlds filled with curious, otherwordly creatures and strange sources of Cosmic Energy.
