4th Sept 1942 Weather Fine. Local flying and night flying tests. 13 aircraft were detailed to join a force of 200 aircraft in an attack on BREMEN, 10 were to bomb the city and 3 would join a small force to attack the Focke-Wulfe factory. Take off was from 00:20 led by S/L Wooldridge who had the newly arrived A flight commander S/L Howell as second pilot on board, with all airborne in 18 minutes. P/O D Shannon was on his first operation as captain but had to turn back early with radio failure. Visibility at the target was good but ground haze and smoke made it impossible to identify the factory target. Flak was heavy and accurate, but all aircraft bombed as required.
All returned safely with many good photographs of the aiming point.

3rd Sept 1942 Weather rain. Local flying only.

2nd Sept 1942 Weather Fine The squadron supplied 8 aircraft to a force of 200 for an attack on KARLSRUHE. F/O Ayout was senior pilot with take off starting at 23:15. P/O Cooper and Sgt Crowfoot both carried 4x 2000lb bombs while the remainder carried 1x4000lb and Incendiaries. Again visibility was excellent and this time the Pathfinders clearly marked the correct target, bombing was from 10,000-13,000 feet with good results observed. All retuning crews reported large fires and the town well alight.
All returned safely, Sgt Hamilton had an engine fail on the return journey but landed safely at base at 04:55.

1st Sept.1942 Weather Fine 11 aircraft were detailed for a raid on SAARBRUCKEN along with 230 other aircraft. Take off was either side of mid-night with W/C Gibson, carrying a single 8000lb bomb, the last aircraft took off at 00:10 . Visibility was excellent but an error by the Pathfinders resulted in the town of SAARLOUIS 12 miles south-east of the intended target being attacked by all but 1 aircraft. The result was that the town received severe damage. F/L Hopgood bombed the intended target, but no damage was later reported.
All aircraft returned safely landing from 04:20

What a fabulous day at Metheringham Airfield yesterday for our 1940’s event!

Thank you to everybody who came along and supported us. We hope you had as enjoyable a time as we did, and we look forward to future events.

August 1942 summary

The Squadron operated on 15 nights and flew 100 sorties.
A total of 523 hours were flown.
The Squadron dropped 323 tons of Bombs and 94 mines.
Both of the above figures was a new record for the Squadron.
The Squadron lost three aircraft resulting in 20 KIA
