🪇JOY

Our final flavour of October Tasting Season!

For us, JOY is about celebration, connection + freedom. The laughter that catches you off guard, the rhythms that bring us together, the freedom to play, create and simply be.

Joy doesn’t always need to be programmed. Sometimes it’s about creating the conditions for it to happen.

This week, we’re exploring JOY through photography, music, making, reflection and gathering together.

Join resident artist Geoffrey Chambers for a creative day exploring memory, identity, everyday rituals and the ancestral. Working with clay and other materials, we’ll make personal shrines and incense burners, honouring what matters to us.

Take your time, follow your curiosity and come as you are.

Introducing JOY 🪇🎉🥳

Completing our exploration of the five pillars at the heart of People Dem Collective - LAND, SEA, PEOPLE, HEALING and JOY - we’re turning to JOY.

For PDC, JOY is about celebration, connection and freedom.

We believe joy is more than a fleeting moment of happiness. It’s something we all deserve to experience, create and share on our own terms.

It’s found in music, dance, food, laughter and the everyday moments that bring us together. In unexpected conversations, new friendships, shared experiences and the freedom to simply be ourselves.

Our experiences remind us that joy doesn’t always need to be organised. Sometimes it’s about creating the conditions for it to happen naturally, through generosity, care and connection.

As PDC grows towards a permanent home, JOY will remain central to how we welcome, collaborate and build together. Creating a space where celebration, play and connection are part of everyday life, not just reserved for special occasions.

More celebration.
More connection.
More freedom.

🌎 PEOPLE

The next flavour we’re exploring as part of our October Tasting Season.

For us, PEOPLE is about solidarity, agency + collective power - how we show up for one another, share knowledge, build relationships and create opportunities that might not otherwise exist.

It’s about more than bringing people together. It’s about what becomes possible when people have the space, resources and relationships to shape things for themselves and each other.

This week, we’re exploring PEOPLE through creativity, photography, storytelling, shared learning and celebration.

Introducing PEOPLE 🌎

Continuing our exploration of the five pillars at the heart of People Dem Collective - LAND, SEA, PEOPLE, HEALING and JOY - we’re turning to PEOPLE.

For PDC, PEOPLE is about solidarity, agency and collective power.

We believe in the power of people coming together, sharing knowledge, supporting one another and creating opportunities that might not otherwise exist.

But it’s about more than bringing people together. It’s about creating the space, relationships and resources for people to develop their ideas, nurture their creativity and shape what comes next.

Meaningful community building takes time, trust and care. It’s about creating opportunities for people not just to participate, but to contribute, influence and feel a genuine sense of belonging.

For Black, Brown and Diaspora communities, access to cultural spaces, resources and opportunities isn’t always equal. We’re interested in what becomes possible when people have the freedom, support and confidence to create on their own terms.

As PDC grows towards a permanent home, PEOPLE will remain at the heart of how we build - investing in relationships, sharing resources and creating space for our communities to shape their own futures.

More solidarity.
More agency.
More collective power.

LAND | Learning from elsewhere, thinking about home.

We’ve spent the past week between Brussels and Arles on a European Precedent Visit brought together by CIVIC SQUARE , alongside people exploring different ways of building, making and living together.

What stays with us is Civic Square’s radical generosity, the openness with which knowledge, relationships and unfinished practice are shared. We don’t need to have it all figured out to learn from one another.

We’ve explored earth, clay, timber, reuse and different ways of building. And our thoughts keep returning to Margate.

What resources are beneath our feet? What techniques have been forgotten? What might we learn from Black, Brown and Diaspora building traditions, and the knowledge and labour too often overlooked?

Could the process of making PDC’s future home become a place for experimentation and new skills, especially for young people? How do they get to shape what comes next?

Serious big ups to everyone who shared this experience with us. Makers, architects, engineers, community organisers, artists, dreamers and everything in between. So many different perspectives, experiences and ways of seeing the world.

Huge gratitude to Civic Square and everyone who opened their doors, shared their practice and travelled alongside us.

Living on the coast, the sea is part of our everyday. But our relationship with water runs deeper, holding stories of ancestry, movement, displacement, freedom, nourishment + joy.

Introducing SEA 🌊

Continuing our exploration of the five pillars at the heart of People Dem Collective - LAND, SEA, PEOPLE, HEALING and JOY - we’re turning to SEA.

For PDC, SEA is about memory, movement and nourishment.

The sea holds histories of ancestral movement, migration and displacement, but also creativity, resistance, freedom and possibility.

Being based in Margate invites us to think about whose histories are remembered, who gets to experience the coast, and how we connect communities who live here, visit and return.

For Black, Brown and Diaspora communities, the sea also connects us to generations who found rest, freedom and joy along the coast.

We’ve been exploring these ideas through our work, from creating space for community organisers to rest, reconnect and find nourishment by the sea, to welcoming young creatives from South London through our Emerging Creatives residency.

These experiences remind us that the sea is more than a backdrop. It’s a place for reflection, connection, creativity and collective care.

As PDC grows, SEA will guide how we connect people, histories and nature, creating opportunities for more communities to experience the coast as a place of belonging and possibility.

More memory. More movement. More nourishment.

At the heart of it all is a question:

How can we care for our coast, honour its histories and create new possibilities for future generations?

NATURAL HAIR POP-UP ✨

Do your locs need a retwist? Looking for an ornate design for your natty dreads? Or struggling to find someone locally who knows how to care for your natural hair?

Tasha Love Hair is coming to PDC.

Tasha is an experienced loctician with 34 years in natural hair care, including working at Back to Eden, the UK’s first natural dreadlock clinic.

She’ll be popping up at PDC on Saturday 31 October, offering loc maintenance, retwists + creative designs, using natural ingredients + LOVE to care for your hair.
