The Cubs from 8th Sheppey Scout Group in Sheerness, had a unique opportunity to explore the Elmley Nature Reserve on Monday 16th February.

The Marsh School, hosted a guided bird watching ramble through the Marshes and alongside the Swale. The guides helped the Cubs to spot common garden birds, ducks and waterfowl, wading birds and birds of prey along the stroll. Detailed descriptions of the birds in flight, their movements, their plumage, tell tale signs like foot prints in the mud were shared by the guides to identify one species of bird from another. The guides pointed out owl pellets on the ground, which lead to the group looking up to the speckled feathers of an owl perched in the tree in front of them.

The Cubs sheltered in the Salt Box bird hide, where The Marsh School discussed the International importance the Elmley Marsh habitat has for birds migrating from the Artic Circle and South Africa. This provided an opportunity to use the binoculars to observe the birds in their natural habitat.

By the end of the session, the Cubs spotted hares, a variety of bugs and plants that thrive at Elmley Marshes. The Cubs are now proficient in understanding the diversity of nature and how well it adapts to the changing seasons. Elmley Marshes are a rich, biodiverse habitat is essential for nature to thrive on the Isle of Sheppey.

Well done, sounds like you had a great time!

11th Broadstairs Cubs had an amazing time completing the 2025 Cub Challenge.

🏕️ Camp Adventures
A big highlight was camp, where the Cubs learned to cook their own meals and gained confidence in outdoor skills.

🥾 Hike & Treasure Trail
They completed a local hike featuring a treasure trail, discovering fun facts and history about our town along the way.

🧼 Uniform Skills
The Cubs also learned how to safely iron their scarves, ready for parade — a surprisingly popular activity!

⛑️ First Aid Scenario Night
Our first aid evening was a huge hit, giving the Cubs hands‑on experience in dealing with different scenarios.

🛒 Food Bank Support
Over several weeks, the Cubs collected donations from friends and family, created beautiful hampers, and delivered them to our local food bank as part of our Harvest Festival celebrations. A wonderful way to give back to the community.

Well done!

1st West Malling Cubs have been working incredibly hard on the 2025 Cubs Challenge. Here are just some of the amazing things they’ve been up to:

🪨 Happiness Pebbles
The Cubs decorated “positive pebbles” with uplifting messages and artwork, then placed them around the community during a hike. We’ve already received some wonderful feedback from people who found them!

⛑️ Emergency Aid Skills
Everyone has been learning vital first aid skills and proudly earned their Stage 3 Emergency Aid badge. They practised CPR, explored different emergency scenarios, and gained confidence in helping others.

🌱 Community Garden Projects
Working with the other sections, the Cubs helped improve the environment by:
• Making bee hotels and bird boxes
• Planting in the Ryarsh School community garden
• Creating planters from old car tyres
• Designing plant labels
Amazing teamwork all round.

🏰 Leeds Castle Big Day Out
We joined Cubs from across the county for a fantastic day of fun, friendship, and local history.

🇬🇧 VE Day Celebration
To mark VE Day, we held a special group celebration with traditional games and a themed party.

🧗 Clip and Climb Sleepover
Alongside the Beavers, the Cubs took on the climbing walls at Tonbridge Clip and Climb, followed by a movie night with popcorn and pizza. A brilliant night of teamwork and adventure.

🏕️ Shelter Building
As part of their challenge badges, the Cubs learned how to build shelters using only rope, a coat, a plastic sheet, and natural materials found in the woods.

🎯 Adventurous Activities
From rock climbing and soft archery to hikes and launching bottle rockets, the Cubs have embraced every challenge with enthusiasm.

It’s been fantastic to see everything you have been doing.

The 14th Broadstairs Cubs have enjoyed taking part in the Kent Cub 2025 Challenge. Their leaders were particularly proud of their work for their Earthtribe badge.

Living near the sea, it was important for the Cubs to think about our beaches and they took part litter picks and created a huge campaign artwork which Margate Library displayed for us during Green week to highlight the impact of littering.

They attended 3 camps: a sleepover in Sandwich where the cubs learnt camp craft, a joint camp with Scouts at LGF (where they took part in Paddlesports/ Climbing/Cavebus and Bushcraft) and our own group camp at Minster where we hiked to the Ramsgate Tunnels.

The photographs are of an earlier hike with the Cubs where we stopped for lunch at the Drapers windmill and the Cubs were lucky enough to have a guided tour.

We also went to Howletts weekend. Our pebbles were painted to celebrate VE Day and these were donated to our local Royal British Legion, Home Maurice House where we were lucky enough to meet with the veterans.

31st Gravesend Cubs have had great fun completing the 2025 Kent Cub Challenges. As well as hikes, den building and camping, we decorated pebbles and spent one of our meetings hiding them around Shorne Woods Country Park. Four were found and posted on the Gravesend Rocks page, which made those Cubs very happy!

In April, the Cubs visited Milton Chantry and New Tavern Fort in Gravesend. Milton Chantry is the oldest building in Gravesend (1322) it used to be a l***r hospital and is now a small museum. The Fort has tunnels where ammunition was stored to defend the Thames in WW2.

In May, we took part in the Gravesham District Cub Camp, and our Cubs designed a flag to fly on our site. Each 6 took a quarter of the flag (a pillow case), and then we sewed them together and created a central link design to combine the pack. We linked up with many other packs on this camp, specifically, a local pack with no NA permit who stayed with us on our site. The Cubs braved the climbing wall, and, among other things, did some archery, rifle shooting and axe throwing.

They took part in Cubs on Water in June, and most recently, in September, we camped at Comp Wood Scout campsite in Borough Green, and had a lovely 5.7 mile hike in Mereworth Woods.

The 7th Swanley Cubs have had an incredible time taking part in the 2025 Kent Cub Challenge.

They loved learning new sports like basketball and tennis, proudly joined the St George’s Day parade for the very first time as a brand‑new group, and some even got the chance to try water sports with another local pack. It’s fantastic to see everything they’ve achieved this year – well done Cubs!

Thank you for all your brilliant challenge ideas and comments.

As part of their Scouting in the Community, the 5th Sheppey Cubs recently supported the local charity Sheppey Matters by decorating minibuses to look festively special for all their users and helping to put together Christmas packages for the elderly.

Well done Cubs.
