West Peckham W.I.

West Peckham W.I. Women building community through connection, kindness, support and friendship. We meet on the second Monday of the Month at 7.30pm in West Peckham Village Hall

West Peckham WI is a busy group with lots going on both at our meetings and outside. Accessibility
The hall is easily accessible and is on one level, it has an accessible WC and there is designated parking with one accessible parking bay situated at the entrance to the village hall. Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
The WI was founded on democratic ideals over 100 years ago and this commitment to

equality is still central to our ethos today. The WI is an inclusive, supportive and progressive organisation for all women with a diverse membership of over 200,000 members. The WI is open to all women. It welcomes and celebrates a diverse cross-section of women, offering a space where they can be themselves surrounded by other supportive women. We do not ask members any personal questions as part of the joining process and are committed to ensuring all members are treated fairly and equally whatever their background or individual circumstances, with equal access to all opportunities on a national and local level.

Our June meeting brought many beautiful flowers to the hall. Flowers and plants on the raffle table, the flower of the month table, and the President’s table. So much colour and lovely smells.

We also had a fabulous speaker, Rachel Philby, an experienced physiotherapist who works within the NHS. Rachel shared her knowledge on the importance of looking after our bones through exercise, movement and nutrition. The talk finished with our members taking part in a variety of weight bearing exercises. Such a good evening and please do contact us if you would like to know more about our WI.

At our June meeting we were fortunate to have Rachel Philby as our guest speaker. Rachel is a NHS Physiotherapist and she spoke about Bones: Structure, Development and Lifelong Strength.
Rachel emphasised the importance of exercise and good diet. She got us up on our feet doing weight exercises. We were a very impressive group and hopefully will continue swinging those dumbbells!!
After this we enjoyed tea and wonderful cakes made by two of our members. This bodes well for the Mereworth Fete and the West Peckham Fete where our members are supplying all the homemade cakes for sale.
During our tea break there were opportunities to buy raffle tickets, purchase bargains at the trading table, vote for Flower of the Month and chat to friends.
Our president, after giving us updates on WI business at National level, spoke about the sub-groups that exist within West Peckham WI. Each month there will be a short presentation from these sub-groups. At this meeting we saw amazing photographs from the Happy Snappers group.

Last week several of our members attended the Annual Meeting which was a virtual meeting, streamed from the NFWI office in London. The meeting had many inspirational speakers, including Ann Boden the founder of the Starling Bank. Her story is very inspiring, with many twists and turns, and is well worth researching her story online.
The meeting was enjoyed by all those that attended, and next year the Annual Meeting will be an ‘in person’ event held in Hull.
Of course members brought and shared lovely food throughout the day.

One of our members has left a large section of her garden to grow wild for the month of May (and may continue to do so 😀).
The wild life are having a wonderful time. Please share any photos/images of your No Mow May gardens, it would be great to see them.

The May meeting was our Annual Meeting, and it was enhanced by an excellent collage of photos of last year. There was also the “Taste and Bake” event, whereby members may bring a dish for others to sample and provide the recipe to repeat at home. This is always interesting and provides welcome snacks– apart from our usual tea and cake!

We voted on two resolutions being put forward for the national Annual Meeting (Action for Women’s homelessness and Accessible toilet facilities).

Our next meeting is on Monday 8th June at 7.30pm West Peckham Village Hall, we always welcome visitors so why not come along and see what we do.

Our AGM this month was a time for sharing food from our Taste and Bake tables. From the beautiful colours on our raffle table, to the colourful Flower of the Month table, this meeting really was a visual delight.

Communigrow is a sustainable food education charity in East Malling, Kent. Our members had a great tour of the gardens and Gavin (the head gardener) was so informative about the amazing work the charity does for the community. Please check out their website and our members would highly recommend a visit and tour of their project.

One of our members was so pleased to have captured this moment when walking around the woods of West Kent, celebrating National Walking Month. The deer came to no harm and quickly returned safely to their family.

May is generally a great month to be walking in and around Kent. This month is also the National Walking Month throughout the UK organised by Living Streets. This year they are highlighting the benefits of walking for women. Enjoy being out in the fresh air everyone.
