Meet Soft-Plastic Steve!

He might be made of plastic, but he’s the soft, flimsy type that doesn’t belong in your home recycling bin.

Soft plastics can't be recycled in the same way that other plastics like bottles, tubs and trays can, so please keep carrier bags, crisp packets, salad bags, clingfilm and other soft plastic packaging out of your recycling.

If you want to give them a better ending, collect them in one bag and drop them off at a collection point available at most local supermarkets.

Giving these items a quick rinse using old washing-up water helps keep recycling clean, and ensures more materials can be turned into something new.

These mischievous rebels keep turning up where they really don’t belong – in your recycling bins.

🥗 Rinse-it Ricky – A recyclable container, but there’s food still left inside!
🛍️ Soft plastic Steve – The wrong type of plastic for household recycling
🧻 The Paper Pretenders – The tissues and wet wipes that belong in your general waste
👕 Textile Tom – Old clothes that are looking for a new life, they just need to follow a different path to get there

Knowing what does and doesn’t belong in the recycling can be confusing sometimes, and while we all have good intentions when we recycle, many of us may be accidentally putting the wrong items in - making your recycling bin very unhappy. 😕

But it’s not too late to change! 💡

The Recycling Rebels all have their own stories to tell, so keep an eye out over the next couple of weeks as we explore them further.

Last chance to apply for the Kent Community Waste Prevention Fund!

Community groups, charities, CICs, social enterprises, residents’ associations, parish and town councils can apply for grants of £500–£5,000 to support projects that help reduce household waste across Kent.

Funding could support initiatives such as food waste reduction, reuse and repair, sharing schemes, composting, refill projects, reusable alternatives and other practical ways to prevent waste.

Have you heard of the Kent Community Waste Prevention Fund?

If your community group, charity, CIC, social enterprise, residents’ association, parish or town council has an idea to help families reduce household waste, you could apply for a grant of £500–£5,000.

From encouraging reusable nappies and reducing food waste to supporting reuse, repair and more sustainable everyday choices, funding is available for projects that make a positive difference across Kent.

The Kent Community Waste Prevention Fund is still open for applications!

Community groups, charities, CICs, social enterprises, residents' associations, parish and town councils across Kent can apply for grants of £500–£5,000 to deliver projects that help prevent household waste, promote reuse and repair, and encourage more sustainable behaviours.

Whether you're tackling food waste, extending the life of textiles and electricals, or developing another innovative waste reduction initiative, it would be great to hear from you.
