This week we’re swapping our usual Friday Late for a special Thursday opening.

We’ll be hosting a performance of Peter Pan by students from the Kate Mooney School of Dance ✨

Join us on Thursday, 3:30–6:30pm — do pop by if you can!

Back in January, when the evenings were dark and cold, we started opening the Café late a few evenings a week with the help of volunteers. The idea was simple really — to create a warm, relaxed space for parents and children to wait between activities, grab a drink after school, or just have somewhere local to be for a little while.

As we move into the lighter evenings, we’ll now be continuing our late opening on Fridays only.

It’s become a bit of a Friday tradition already — milkshakes after school, homework at the tables, friends catching up, and people dropping in for a quiet drink or bite to eat at the end of the week.

We’d love to see you there! 💛

Reminder - Working Group meeting tomorrow 7pm, join us as we plan our next Working Day. All welcome!

Would you like to get a bit more involved with the Community Centre?

If you're free on Wednesday 17th June, why not come along to our Working Group meeting? We'll be planning our next Working Day, including finishing the bench varnishing and creating an external maintenance cupboard.

It's a friendly group and a good chance to meet people, hear what's going on at the Centre, and chat about any ideas, skills or time you might like to contribute. There's no pressure to commit to anything – we're always happy to meet people who are interested in getting involved.

Our Working Days themselves are great fun: plenty of tea, coffee, and baps, along with good conversation, and the satisfaction of seeing projects come together.

All welcome!

A lovely day to pop into the café for a coffee and a slice of cake. The cake counter is looking particularly tempting today, and the Antique Fair is on too, with beautiful treasures to browse – jewellery, art, homeware, clothing and all sorts of unexpected finds. This gorgeous marble mortar and pestle was just £10!

Perfect for a relaxed wander and a little weekend treat. We'd love to see you.

Today we wanted to take a moment to celebrate Kevin, who is retiring after 30 years of serving the Lostwithiel community through the Co-op.

Anyone who has been into the store over the years will know Kevin for his friendly smile, kindness, and the time he always took to help people out or stop for a chat. He has been a constant part of local life for decades, and will be very much missed.

The Community Centre has also benefited from his support over the years. In fact, one of the last things Kevin did before retiring was encourage us to apply for a small community grant. On his final day, we were delighted to receive the cheque, which will go towards new shelving for the Reading Room.

A young person from the Centre kindly accepted it on behalf of everyone who uses the space — a lovely moment to mark his last day.

A huge thank you to Kevin for 30 years of service, kindness and support to the community. We hope your retirement brings plenty of rest, enjoyment, and time for all the things you want to do next! You will be very much missed.

The Cancer Support Group is back this week — Wednesday from 2.00–3.30pm.

It’s a relaxed, friendly space to sit together over a cup of tea or coffee, with cake and conversation, and a chance to connect with others in a similar place.

The group is hosted by Carolyn Screech, who runs cancer community cafés across Cornwall. We’re very fortunate that she is able to join us and support these sessions on Wednesdays.

Cancer touches so many of us, whether personally or through someone we love, and having a place to talk, listen, or simply sit with others can make a real difference.

If you, or someone you know, might find it helpful, please share and do come along. You’d be very welcome.

As part of our series introducing some of the people who help bring the Community Centre to life, we’d like to share a bit about Mary.

For many years, Mary has cared for the gardens at the Centre, as well as the flower displays around Lostwithiel. Her knowledge, hard work and dedication help make the town a brighter place for everyone.

This photo was taken yesterday in the pouring rain. While most of us were trying to stay dry, Mary was out on her usual rounds in her yellow raincoat, tending to the plants as always.

We were chatting about some new plants we’re bringing into the café, and Mary was very keen to make sure they wouldn’t be forgotten. When we mentioned we had a trustee using an app to track watering and care, she gave us a look and said, “All you need is a watering can!” before kindly offering us one.

It made us all smile — very Mary: practical, generous, and quietly helping things grow properly.

Proper shout out to Mary — we’re very lucky to have her.

A huge thank you to the Duchy for their generous donation of these beautiful Bergs Potter pots, now brightening up the Community Centre with lovely geraniums.

They look right at home in the Garden Café, helping to make the Centre an even more welcoming place to stop for a coffee, homemade cake or lunch.

We're open Monday–Friday, 10am–3pm, with late opening on Fridays until 6.30pm.

Pop in and enjoy a calm, friendly space, and keep an eye out for a few more improvements and additions coming soon! 😊
