✨ HONOURING OUR COMMUNITIES✨

Our 'Honouring Our Communities' evening was about celebrating the changemakers, the champions and the everyday heroes who turn passion into action and make a real difference in people's lives.

Among those we invited to the stage was the always-sharply dressed gentleman, Ulster University Professor James Uhomoibhi 🌟

Here is just a fraction of what we had to say about James:

Professor James Uhomoibhi, distinguished scholar, pioneering educator and dedicated community advocate, your life and work exemplify the power of education to open doors, challenge barriers and strengthen communities.

Arriving in Northern Ireland in 1987 as a student, you built a career rooted in learning, discovery and opportunity. Your academic journey took you to Queen's University Belfast where you contributed to teaching and the early adoption of online learning tools. And later to Ulster University, where your work in education and research continued to make a meaningful contribution.

Your commitment to innovation has extended beyond Northern Ireland. As a Visiting Professor Of Science, Technology and Environmental Studies at The Open University Of Tanzania, you have contributed to international learning and research, bringing together expertise in technology, e-learning, strategic thinking and environmental studies. Through multidisciplinary collaboration, you have championed approaches that make knowledge more accessible and learning more effective.

Professor Uhomoibhi, for your outstanding contribution to scholarship, educational innovation, civic participation and the advancement of Black excellence, we are proud to honour you. May your example continue to inspire others to pursue knowledge with purpose and to use their achievements in service of a fairer, more inclusive society.

When we set out to 'Honour Our Communities', we wanted to celebrate the changemakers, the champions and the everyday heroes who turn passion into action and make a real difference in people's lives.

Among those was a man who has gone from punches to punchlines, the brilliant Tommy McCarthy 🌟🥊

Here is just some of what we had to say about Tommy:

Champion boxer, history-maker and emerging comedian, Tommy your journey from a young boy discovering boxing in Belfast to the international sporting stage is a powerful story of discipline, talent, resilience and ambition. You have shown young people that where they begin does not determine how far they can go. A pupil Of St Mary's Christian Brothers Grammar School, you began boxing at just 12-years-old with Oliver Plunkett Amateur Boxing Club. At 14, you claimed your first national schoolboy title. You went on to win eight national titles across schoolboy, youth, under-21 and senior elite levels, including two senior elite championships - an extraordinary record built through years of dedication and hard work. Representing Northern Ireland at the Commonwealth Games in India, you won a silver medal and made history as the first Black athlete to win a Commonwealth Games medal for Northern Ireland.

As a professional boxer, you continued to break new ground, capturing the WBC International title and the European Cruiserweight Championship. In becoming the first Black Irish boxer to win a European boxing title, you secured a place in sporting history and demonstrated what determination, self-belief and opportunity can achieve.

Tommy, North West Migrants Forum proudly honours your historic contribution to boxing, your creativity in comedy and your positive example to young people.

What a special evening at Stormont! ❤️

Our Honouring Our Communities event was all about celebrating the incredible people who go above and beyond to make our communities stronger, fairer and more inclusive. The changemakers, the champions, the everyday heroes who turn passion into action and make a real difference in people's lives.

One very special person we were proud to celebrate was Mayor of Galway, Helen Ogbu! 🌟

Helen's story is one of courage, determination, service and breaking barriers. And what a story it is.

👏 Elected to Galway City Council in 2024, Helen made history as the first person of colour to serve on the council. She went on to become Mayor of Galway, bringing with her a powerful vision of leadership rooted in Belonging, Young People and Community.

But Helen's contribution goes far beyond making history.

Through her dedication to public service, community development, family support and fostering, she has turned lived experience into meaningful action. She has challenged exclusion, championed racial equality and helped create a more welcoming Ireland where everyone has the opportunity to belong and thrive.

Her journey is particularly inspiring for women, refugees, migrants and young people who may never have imagined themselves in positions of influence and leadership. Helen is living proof that our backgrounds do not define the limits of our future. Our voices matter. Our experiences matter. And we all have something valuable to contribute. ❤️

At North West Migrants Forum, we were proud to recognise Helen for her historic leadership, courageous commitment to racial equality, outstanding service to families and communities, and unwavering dedication to belonging and inclusion.

Helen, thank you for breaking barriers, opening doors and showing future generations what is possible. Your leadership is an inspiration, and your impact will be felt for generations to come 🌍🙌

BACK TO BALLYSALLY! ❤️🖤

Our dynamic duo, Beverly and Bashir, were back at Ballysally Primary School on Monday delivering a workshop on Black history and anti-racism.

And what a joy it was to be back! Ballysally is such a wonderful school – welcoming, engaging, full of warmth, enthusiasm and fun. Exactly what an inspiring learning environment should be! ✨

A huge thank you to staff and pupils for inviting us back. We had an absolutely brilliant time and loved every minute of it!

Our visit was part of two important programmes:

🖤 Black Heritage in NI: The Hidden History Project, funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund Northern Ireland

🤝 Intercultural Cross-border Inclusion Programme, supported by PEACEPLUS and managed by Special EU Programmes Body - SEUPB

'Nurses dispense comfort, compassion and caring without even a prescription' – Val Saintsbury

Some people make a difference through what they do. Others make a difference through who they are. And then there are those special people who do both. ❤️

We recently gathered at Stormont for a very special evening, celebrating the remarkable leaders, champions and everyday heroes whose dedication, passion and commitment help shape stronger, fairer and more inclusive communities.

Among those invited to take to the stage was our very own Beverly Viola Taylor Simpson – a much-loved friend, dedicated nurse, passionate trade union activist and tireless champion for equality.

And what better way to celebrate 'our Bev' than to reflect on just some of the extraordinary contributions she has made?

For two decades, Beverly has called Derry home, giving so much of herself to the people and communities around her. As a registered nurse, she has devoted her professional life to caring for others across Derry and Strabane, bringing compassion, dignity and kindness to everything she does.

But Beverly's commitment to caring doesn't end when her shift is over.

While raising her three children and meeting the demands of a busy nursing career, she has continued to give generously of her time, volunteering, supporting neighbours, encouraging community participation and standing shoulder to shoulder with those whose voices too often go unheard.

A passionate advocate for racial equality, Black history and cultural heritage, Beverly has worked tirelessly to ensure that Black communities are not simply welcomed, but genuinely recognised, represented, valued and included.

Beverly embodies what true community leadership looks like. It isn't about titles or recognition. It's about showing up, listening, taking action and making sure others have the opportunity to be heard.

Beverly, your compassion as a nurse, your dedication as a community champion, your unwavering commitment to equality and your contribution to public life are an inspiration to us all.

We are immensely proud to celebrate you and all that you do.

✨ A GOOD EDUCATION CAN CHANGE ANYONE. A GOOD TEACHER CAN CHANGE EVERYTHING. ✨

On Friday evening, October 23, we travelled to Stormont for 'Honouring Our Communities' – a special evening dedicated to celebrating the remarkable leaders, champions and everyday heroes who work tirelessly to shape, strengthen and inspire our communities.

And there was one inspirational woman we were particularly proud to put front and centre: Dr Ebun A Joseph – pioneering scholar, inspirational teacher, accomplished author and fearless champion of racial equality. ✨

Here is just some of what we had the privilege of saying about Dr Joseph on the evening:

Dr Ebun Joseph,

Your pioneering scholarship, visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to racial equality have made an extraordinary contribution to challenging structural racism, advancing equality and strengthening the recognition, representation and inclusion of Black and minoritised communities across Ireland and beyond.

Through your work, research and advocacy, you have consistently reminded us that racial equality requires far more than words or expressions of goodwill. It demands honesty in confronting injustice, accountability from institutions and the courage to transform the systems that continue to perpetuate exclusion.

Your legacy cannot be measured solely by the books you have written, the institutions you have founded or the students you have taught. It is equally reflected in the voices you have amplified, the assumptions you have challenged and the generations of Black scholars, women and community leaders you continue to inspire.

At North West Migrants Forum, we believe that building Our Shared Home requires the courage to confront racism, the wisdom to recognise the contributions of every community and the determination to create a society where everyone has the opportunity to belong, participate and thrive.

Dr Ebun Joseph, your extraordinary dedication to scholarship, justice and human dignity embodies these values.

In recognition of your pioneering achievements, intellectual leadership, courageous advocacy and outstanding contribution to advancing racial equality and Black excellence, North West Migrants Forum was immensely proud to honour and celebrate you.

Your work reminds us that education is about more than knowledge; it is about opening doors, challenging injustice, changing perspectives and creating opportunities for others to follow.

May your influence continue to reach classrooms, communities and institutions, inspiring future generations to question, learn, lead with courage and help build a fairer, more equal and inclusive world.
