The UK Government has been heavily lobbied by PR agents for the large wealthy travel companies who make millions from brutal and dangerous animal tourism and oppose the Low-Welfare Act. Very worryingly for the vulnerable creatures of the world and the 630 tourists killed, 890 more injured by abused captive wildlife since 1990, despite pre-election promises of implementation Government has started speaking of “industry-led, non-legislative options” instead of implementing the Low-Welfare Act which was passed overwhelmingly in Parliament and with enormous public backing. In response, a national independent survey commissioned by STAE and just published finds:

- 86% of the public support the law, 6% oppose it.

- 7% trust the travel industry to self-regulate in this area, 71% distrust it.

- 68% say that the government should lead in removing adverts.

- On public safety, 14% say the risks of attacks are acceptable; 67% unacceptable, representing voters across all parties.

We must remember the whole reason for the need for new law was to correct the reckless, ruthless market created by self-regulation by the travel industry. Let’s hope the new Government shows some spine against brutal commercial interests trying to thwart Parliament, for the sake of so many innocent and endangered elephants, apes, big cats, bears, dolphins and many others.

Captured from the wild as a calf, Emily was brought to Buttonwood Park Zoo in New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1968. After spending decades in captivity, the 61-year-old Asian elephant is now the only elephant in the whole state and has lived alone since Ruth, her only companion, died in 2024. Sign this petition to allow Emily to retire in a sanctuary where she can be happy and free.

Wild elephants live in herds dominated by females. The young males are ostracised on reaching adolescence, can become more aggressive and adopt lives alone or in small groups.
