Totally Leighton Buzzard

Earlier this year during held in June, we held a showing of the National Emergency Briefing about climate change at the Leighton Buzzard Library Theatre with Alex Mayer MP in attendance. This issue is now due to be debated in Parliament on 16 November. But there is still more to do locally in showing the film as widely as possible, so I hope that more local groups, schools, churches and community groups will take action to show the film. The film is free to screen and aims to generate debate and action amomgst communities. It has been screened up and down the country with 4,249 screenings already held to date and a further 1,429 screenings planned. Its easy to host a screening and anyone can organise one. It would be great to get it shown more locally in Leighton Buzzard, as far its only be shown once in the town.

Do Repair Cafés take work from local businesses? Quick answer: No—we actually support them! 🛠️🤝 Prompted by someone complaining that Totally Leighton Buzzard takes jobs away from local businesses I want to tackle this issue head on.

​Here’s why Repair Cafes like the RepairCafeLB are great for local economy:

​We tackle what shops can’t: We generally fix smaller, out-of-warranty items that aren't economically viable for commercial repair shops.
🛠🧵
​We refer: For big appliances or complex electronics, we actively send people to local tradespeople and shops. We dont fix things like TVs or petrol powered items, big white goods or electric blankets.

​We buy local: We send visitors to town hardware stores and haberdasheries for replacement parts and supplies.
🛠🧵
​We build a "repair-first" mindset: We teach people to fix rather than throw away, making them more likely to hire local pros for bigger jobs in the future! A big part about Repair Cafes is the sharing of skills and knowledge with visitors and amongst the volunteers.

​Also Repair Cafes run usually for 3 hours a month to keep items out of landfill and support our high street. We are a volunteer-led complementary community resource 🧡 Everyone welcome even those who are curious, critical or sceptical like or others. And to note we do have certain processes and procedures eg 1 item per person so we can try to help everyone fairly if possible 🧡 See you at our next monthly session!

Yummy treats at today's RepairCafeLB as we celebrated . Thanks to everyone who joined us today - volunteers (bakers and fixers), visitors and also other community groups - Buzz Community Energy, Leighton BuzzCycles, letsbuzz and Leighton Buzzard Ramblers. Its a team effort.

What impact does the RepairCafeLB have in Leighton Buzzard? Did you know that after crunching the latest data from last months event, I can now update that since the group started for first time in March 2023 that we have together saved more than 8860kg of CO2 emissions (the equivalent of growing about 148 seedlings for 10 years) by fixing and mending broken things. Thank you to everyone involved in making this happen

So don't forget to join us on Saturday 24th October from 10.30am to 1.30pm at the Leighton Buzzard Royal British Legion to celebrate . We will be joined by Leighton BuzzCycles, Buzz Community Energy, Leighton Buzzard Ramblers and letsbuzz. The theme is which is what our group is all about. In these challenging times we need more spaces and groups that bring people together.
