Kelty and District Loving Hands

Kelty and District Loving Hands A group for people who love to knit, crochet or sew & want a useful outlet for their work. SiMBA & FifeSands. We make the knitted items that go into these boxes.

We supply a wide variety of handicrafts to several charities & the NHS. Kelty was the birthplace of a voluntary organisation called Loving Hands, which was set up for people who enjoy knitting, sewing or crocheting but who had no outlet for their handiwork. The ethos was to match up their skills with the needs of charities or worthy causes around the UK & globally. The first meeting took place on

6th August 2007 in the old Community Centre & the Kelty group has now grown to it’s current size of over 40 regular members with many more who knit, crochet & sew for the group & bring their donations to us when they can. Our Kelty group supports the following charities:-

Edinburgh Direct Aid - we provide warm clothing for all age groups, toiletries, stationary & any other items as needed to support their work in refugee camps around the world. These 2 charities provide memory boxes for bereaved families who have lost a baby through neonatal death or stillbirth. Blysthwood Care - we support their annual Christmas shoe box appeal. West Fife Guide Dogs - we support their fundraising with appropriate handicrafts. Scottish SPCA – we provide bedding & toys for the animals in their care. NHS - we provide hundreds of heart shaped pillows for mastectomy patients, thousands of shoulder bags which are used for drainage bottles, syringe drivers & heart monitors to enable patients to remain mobile, twiddle muffs & mats for patients with dementia, & many bags of clothing for the Special Care Baby Units

If we receive local or national appeals for help we do our best to provide what is needed.

Your grandmother's favourite hobby might be one of the most powerful brain protection tools ever studied.

Researchers tracking adults over 60 found that people who regularly knitted, crocheted, or did similar handcraft activities had significantly lower rates of cognitive decline. In some cohorts, dementia risk dropped by nearly half compared to non-crafters.

Here is why it works. Knitting activates multiple brain regions simultaneously: motor coordination, pattern recognition, working memory, counting, and creative problem solving. All at once. It is essentially a full brain workout disguised as something calming.
The benefits compound over time. The longer you do it, the more cognitive reserve you build, which acts as a neurological buffer against the changes that lead to dementia.

If you are a caregiver, this matters for your brain too. Chronic stress accelerates cognitive aging, and active hobbies are one of the best studied ways to fight back.

So get those pins out ladies & keep those little grey cells working πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒ
