🌍✊🏿 Celebrating Black History Month: Unity in Diversity! ❤️🖤💚

What a fantastic celebration of Black History Month! 🎉

ISCRE was delighted to see the success of the event hosted by BME Support Group at the University of Suffolk, bringing together people from different backgrounds and communities for a memorable celebration of culture, identity and shared humanity.

From powerful messages of solidarity, unity and togetherness, to delicious food from across the world and music that brought people together, the event was a beautiful reminder of the strength that lies in our diversity. 🌎🍲🎶

Black History Month is not only an opportunity to celebrate the achievements, contributions and heritage of Black communities, but also a chance to reflect on the importance of understanding one another, challenging inequalities and building a society where everyone feels valued, respected and included.

A huge thank you to BME Suffolk Group and everyone involved in organising this wonderful event, as well as everyone who attended and contributed to its warm, welcoming atmosphere.

At ISCRE, we believe that our differences should unite us, not divide us. Events like this remind us that when we come together, celebrate one another and stand in solidarity, we create stronger, more inclusive communities for everyone. 🤝🏾❤️

✨ As we close off October, we’re reflecting on the incredible start to Beyond Boundaries Programme, Cohort 2! 💙
What a first month it’s been, welcoming new participants and mentors, starting new journeys and building connections! Following the success of Year 1, we couldn’t have asked for a more inspiring group to kick off Year 2.
In just Month 1 of 9, our participants have already attended two trips, met professionals, had their first 1-to-1 CV sessions, and some have even had their first introductory sessions with their mentors.
We’re so excited to see what the next eight months have in store! 🚀✨

National Hate Crime Awareness Week 2026

According to the Home Office's Hate Crime, England and Wales, year ending March 2026, police recorded 146,825 hate crimes in England and Wales in the year ending March 2026. This represents a 7% increase on the previous year, with race-related hate crimes increasing by 9%, to 107,926 offences.

Young people’s voices matter.

ISCRE facilitated Suffolk’s latest Police Powers Public Scrutiny Meeting with students from West Suffolk College.
The session gave young people the opportunity to ask questions, share their experiences and scrutinise how police powers are used—helping to strengthen understanding, trust and accountability.

Celebrating partnership, leadership and fair opportunities at HMP Highpoint

We are delighted to see the work of Ipswich and Suffolk Council for Racial Equality (ISCRE) recognised following the recent unannounced inspection of HMP Highpoint by His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons (HMIP).

HMIP highlighted the progress made in promoting fair treatment and specifically recognised the valuable support provided through the partnership with ISCRE.
At the heart of this work is a simple but important principle: everyone should have a fair opportunity to navigate their rehabilitation journey, regardless of their background or circumstances.

For ISCRE, our work with men at HMP Highpoint is about helping to ensure that equality of opportunity is not simply a policy aspiration, but something experienced in practice. It is about listening to people's experiences, challenging barriers, supporting individuals to understand and exercise their rights, and working constructively with prison colleagues to improve outcomes.

We are particularly proud of the strong relationship that has developed over the years between ISCRE and HMP Highpoint. Effective change is built through trust, openness and a shared commitment to doing better. This partnership demonstrates what can be achieved when a prison and an external community organisation work together with a common purpose.

We would like to recognise the leadership of Keiran Manners and Phanuel Mutumburi in developing and sustaining this important relationship, and to thank colleagues at HMP Highpoint for their continued commitment to working with ISCRE.

The HMIP recognition is encouraging, but for us it is also a reminder that there is always more to do. Fair treatment, equality and rehabilitation are not one-off projects, they require sustained leadership, challenge, listening and partnership.

We are proud of the work being done at HMP Highpoint and look forward to continuing this journey together.
