World Sickle Cell Day was established by the United Nations in 2008 to raise awareness about sickle cell disorder; a serious inherited blood disorder that affects millions of people worldwide 🩸

It affects the red blood cells, which carry oxygen around the body, develop abnormally. It is caused by a gene mutation, which gives the red cell its sickle shape. Instead of being round, soft and spongey, the sickled red cells are hard, sticky and long. This means they stick together, which causes them to get blocked and are unable to travel in the small blood vessels, and do not live as long as healthy red blood cells, causing extreme pain and serious complications ☹️

Giving blood can save up to 3 lives because a single blood donation is separated into three key components, which can be used to treat different patients with different needs. 🩸

Below are some examples:

Red Blood Cells – can be used to treat conditions like sickle cell disorder, blood loss from surgery, childbirth, and emergencies.
Plasma – can be used to help patients with clotting disorders, liver conditions, and severe burns.
Platelets – are needed for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.

So, 1 donation = helping to save or improve the lives of 3 patients ❤️

We would like to THANK the amazing people who donate and help urge new donors to make an appointment and save lives. Last year, just under 800,000 people donated blood. If one million people gave blood regularly, the national blood stocks would be healthier.
