Seven hours on service during major multi-agency search

At 10.17am today, Saturday 5 September, Hunstanton RNLI volunteer crew were requested to assemble to assist with a significant multi-agency search for a missing person in the southern area of The Wash.

Hunstanton’s inshore lifeboat was launched and tasked by HM Coastguard to carry out an extensive search at sea.

After covering approximately 88 miles, the lifeboat returned to Hunstanton to refuel. Once refuelled, the crew launched again and returned to the search area to continue the operation.

The multi-agency response involved Coastguard Rescue Teams from Sutton Bridge, Skegness, Wrangle and Hunstanton, Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 912, Lincolnshire Lowland Search and Rescue, Norfolk Police and Lincolnshire Police, alongside Hunstanton RNLI.

Searches were carried out over a large area, both on land, at sea and from the air. The chart pictured gives an indication of the scale and extent of the search across The Wash.

The missing person was subsequently located, bringing the search to a conclusion. No further information will be shared out of respect for those involved.

After almost seven hours on service and approximately 115 miles covered, Hunstanton’s lifeboat returned to station at 5pm, where she was refuelled and made ready for service once again.

Hunstanton RNLI tasked to search for missing person

At 8.46pm on Thursday 27 August, Hunstanton RNLI volunteer crew were requested to assemble following reports of a missing person.

The crew were tasked to assist with a search along the eastern side of the River Great Ouse and commenced a search pattern of the area.

During the search, the crew were informed that the person had been located away from the river. The team were subsequently stood down mid-search and returned to station, where the lifeboat was refuelled and rehoused, ready for the next service.

CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER 🌧️🌊

Unfortunately, tonight’s Full Moon Sound Bath at Old Hunstanton Beach has been cancelled due to the weather conditions.

We’re so disappointed that our final one of the season can’t go ahead, but the weather has other ideas and everyone’s safety comes first.

All-night callout for both Hunstanton RNLI crews

At 00:10 on Thursday 27 August 2026, Hunstanton RNLI’s volunteer crew were requested to assemble after being tasked by HM Coastguard to assist two people whose single-person hovercraft’s had broken down on Wrangle Flats, off the Lincolnshire coast.

Hunstanton’s hovercraft Hunstanton Flyer and inshore lifeboat (ILB) Spirit of West Norfolk responded to the incident.

Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 912 assisted by identifying a safe route across the mudflats, helping Hunstanton Flyer navigate the deep gullies to reach the two casualties.

Both casualties were safely recovered and transferred to Spirit of West Norfolk. The ILB then transported them back across The Wash to Heacham, where they were reunited with their vehicle.

Conditions proved particularly challenging for the crew of Hunstanton Flyer on the return journey, with the height of the swell making the passage across The Wash difficult for the hovercraft.

Both Hunstanton Flyer and Spirit of West Norfolk returned safely to Hunstanton Lifeboat Station at approximately 04:30.

The work didn’t finish there. Both lifesaving assets then needed to be refuelled, rehoused and made ready for service again. With everything completed, the volunteer crew were finally able to head home at around 06:00 for some much-needed sleep — nearly six hours after the initial call.

A fantastic example of teamwork between Hunstanton RNLI and HM Coastguard, with everyone working through the night in challenging conditions to bring two people safely back to shore.

… Johnathon Jarvis, our very own super hero fundraiser….. popped down to the station on Sunday to present the Crew with another one of his giant buckets of funds.

Johnathon walked a marathon in a day on May 30th and along with his coffee mornings and continuous fundraising this year alone, presented the crew with £1755.

His fundraising total over the last three years has now hit £10,000… and still he keeps going…. Well on the way to funding that hovercraft, Johnathon!

We can’t thank you enough, we wish you all the RNLI luck in the world for your up and coming awards evening at the Radio Norfolk ‘ Make a Difference Awards’ in September for which you are shortlisted and we thank you for being such a hige contributor to the RNLI. 👏👏👏👏👏

Hunstanton RNLI is looking for a volunteer Lifeboat Press Officer to join our team. 🛟

Every launch, training exercise, fundraising event and milestone has a story to tell — and we’re looking for someone who can help us share those stories with our local community and beyond.

As our Lifeboat Press Officer, you’ll help promote the work of Hunstanton Lifeboat Station, working with local media and helping us share news, photographs and stories about our volunteers and lifesaving work.

This could be a great role for someone who enjoys writing, photography, social media and communicating with people. You’ll be part of the wider station team, helping people understand what goes on behind the scenes and raising awareness of the work of the RNLI.

Full support and training will be provided.
