The Jacket Women: single mothers of the workhouse by Maria Pavledis
Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse, 9 March – 1 November 2026

Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse will open its doors for a new season on Monday 9 March, with a new exhibition exploring the lives of ‘The Jacket Women’ - single mothers who lived in the workhouse from the 1830s to late 1860s. Art works by Norfolk-based print maker Maria Pavledis will be on display, including a newly created installation of printed paper jackets. These works will be shared alongside a collection of workhouse objects curated by PhD candidate Charlotte Kirklin, and the exhibition will include new research into the lives and treatment of unmarried mothers at Mitford and Launditch Union Workhouse (Gressenhall) in the mid-nineteenth century.

Techniques used by the artist include monoprint, drypoint and etching on fragile paper that is reminiscent of skin. Maria has also experimented with the process of eco-printing using plants foraged on the museum site, a process that involves soaking and steaming plant matter to release natural pigments and shapes onto paper.

Visitors can experience this evocative exhibition included with general admission, 9 March - 1 November 2026.

Inspiration for ‘Where we walk’?

Sir Tony Robinson laces up his boots and hits the trail in 'Ancient Tracks', a fascinating series that explores Britain’s oldest walking routes — many dating back centuries, if not millennia.

Far from being just scenic strolls, each episode delves into the deep history beneath Britain’s footpaths. Robinson walks sections of routes like the Ridgeway, Offa’s D**e Path, and the Pilgrims’ Way, revealing how they were shaped by prehistoric settlers, Roman legions, Saxon kings, medieval pilgrims, and even smugglers and traders.

As he walks, Robinson brings his trademark enthusiasm and storytelling skill to ancient battlefields, mysterious burial mounds, sacred sites, and forgotten landmarks. He meets local historians and archaeologists, often uncovering the legends, rituals, and real events that gave these paths their place in history.

The series is great for British TV fans who enjoy shows like Walking Through History, Coast, or Walking Britain's Roman Roads.

In the US, you can watch it on Amazon Prime.
