Up next on Meet the member is our very talented accompanist Kim!
I began playing for Marsh Ladies in October 2008 after their trip to Tallinn, and under the
temporary leadership of Gordon Stewart. I had previously deputised twice for Christopher
Pulleyn, and the then chair, Fiona Wakely, kept ringing me up and finally persuaded me that
Marsh Ladies was what I needed in my life. She must have been correct as nearly 20 years
on I’m still here!
Over the years, I have learnt a great deal from the various conductors and coaches that I
have worked with, and also from the ladies in the choir who can offer a totally different but
just as important perspective to the professional musician. Rehearsals can be seriously hard
work, but they are also fun, and often uplifting and regenerating. Communal singing is so
beneficial to well being and can be a great exercise and no matter what mood one is in on
arrival, one leaves uplifted and ready to meet the next day. Besides performing at concerts,
festivals, celebrations such as weddings and anniversaries, or providing some comfort at the
occasional funeral or memorial, many other social events take place, from walking trips and
picnics in the park to theatre outings or weekend excursions and the occasional voyage
abroad. I have made many great and lasting friendships through the choir which isn’t just a
choir - it is a group of very committed and loyal friends with a common goal of singing and
performing to their best ability and providing joy and entertainment, and their cake making
skills are an unsurpassed bonus!

Up next on this month’s meet the member is Heike! One of our wonderful Second Sopranos!! I joined in June 2024 and sing in the second sopranos. Being in a 4 part Ladies choir means we don’t often get the melody but have interesting parts that help to bring a rich sound to our concerts. More importantly for me, we don’t have to sing the really high notes.

I started singing in a choir when I first started work as a way to find community in a new area. However, the early years of my working life were very busy with much time spent away from home so it wasn’t always easy to fit in choir practices/concerts. When I moved to Huddersfield I initially joined a singing for fun group and attended sporadically. Eventually, I had more time and was ready to get back to singing with a choir that sang in concerts.
We are blessed in Huddersfield with such a wide range of choirs on offer. I went to quite a few concerts to check out music styles and group make-up. When I attended the 2023 Christmas concert of MLC I loved the pieces they sang and the group dynamics. The leaflet on my seat included an invitation to attend an open rehearsal the following summer. The responses I got when first approaching the choir by email were really welcoming. Then the first session included a cake social as well as singing and I found out the choir also has some social events. I knew I had found the right group for me to get back into singing regularly.

Everyone is so friendly. It was great being given a buddy (Fiona) to help me in the first months, alongside the others in second Sops. Meeting choir members from other sections at the Christmas meal social.
All our concerts are great but I especially love those with a community element, e.g. Christmas Carol singing at the Brighouse Dementia Cafe and the Gaggia concerts in May.

I sometimes struggle with my energy levels & concentration on a Thursday evening, so I really appreciate extra Saturday sessions when there is more time to learn the repertoire or as is the case this year we are receiving vocal coaching.

I love the range of pieces we tackle. From our Spring 2026 list my favourites are Musica Dei, Seal Lullaby and Let the River Run.
