💔 Another life lost to Metabolic Bone Disease.

Today, we lost another animal who came into our rescue suffering from Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD).

We have previously lost Norma, a tortoise, and Percy, a leopard gecko, to the devastating effects of MBD after they came into our care.

These animals were not ours from the beginning. They came to us needing help, and sadly, sometimes the damage caused by poor husbandry is simply too severe to undo.

MBD is so much more than “weak bones.” It can cause an animal’s bones to become soft and fragile, leading to deformities, fractures, muscle weakness, tremors, difficulty eating and moving, and severe pain. In advanced cases, the damage can be irreversible and MBD can ultimately be fatal.

What makes it even more heartbreaking is that MBD is often preventable.

This is why research BEFORE getting an animal is so important.

Before bringing any animal home, you need to understand exactly what that species requires — including appropriate UVB, calcium and supplementation, heating, temperatures, humidity, diet, enclosure size and overall husbandry. These are not optional extras. They are essential to keeping an animal healthy.

Please don't assume that because an animal is small, inexpensive or commonly kept that it is easy to care for.

Research the species. Research their needs. Speak to reputable keepers and exotic vets. Make sure you can provide the correct care before bringing that animal home.

Because when husbandry goes wrong, it isn't the owner who suffers the consequences.

Please research before you get an animal. Don't let lack of knowledge become an animal's suffering.

Surrender Sunday - what a busy day yesterday was with 5 new surrenders
Maple - 8 year old female royal python
Slippy - female leopard gecko (unsure of age)
Percy - 2 year old leopard gecko (in very bad health) RIP
Rachel - 4 year old female boa
Shoelace - 18 year old female royal python

Meet Percy the newest resident - there's some work ahead of us with this little guy but we feel he will pull through 💚 thank you so much to Kyle and Faith for collecting Percy and bringing him to us 💚💚 we will keep updating on Percy's condition
