Following our recent Violence Against Women and Girls awareness event, Hornsea WI has created a special Christmas tree for the St Nicholas Christmas Tree Festival, decorated with handmade orange flowers.

The colour orange is a symbol of the UN’s Orange the World campaign, supporting the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on 25th November. It represents hope, safety, and a future free from violence against women and girls.

As part of the 16 Days of Activism, orange is used globally to spark conversations and raise awareness from illuminated landmarks to the planting of orange flowers. 🧡🌼

We also invite you to take a white ribbon (while they last) and show your support for the White Ribbon Campaign, standing against violence towards women and girls.

Together, we can make a difference. 🧡🎄🤍

It was great to be a part of the candle lit vigil in Beverley last night on White Ribbon Day. Thank you East Yorkshire Federation of WIs , Humberside Scouts, Beverley Town Council & Toll Gavel Church.
White Ribbon Day was started by a man and is aimed at raising awareness and creating change among men - this powerful video (link below) was shown at the event last night and we thought it was worth sharing here. Created with award winning photographer Claudia Janke featuring White Ribbon Ambassadors - from different backgrounds who have committed to speaking up for women and girls.

Violence Against Women & Girls Event – Thank You

Thank you so much to everyone who joined us last night to support this important event.

We heard powerful and inspiring contributions from a range of speakers, including:

• Cllr Elaine Young, Mayor of Hornsea who shared news of a soon-to-launch charity that will support children affected by domestic abuse here in Hornsea.
• Christine Snowden, Chairman of the East Yorkshire Federation of WIs, who also spoke about the strength and visibility of WI and Women’s Rugby Clubs coming together.
• PC Carl Osler, Community Cohesion Officer with Humberside Police, who updated us on the Violence Against Women and Girls Independent Advisory Group and encouraged local involvement.
• Hull Women's Aid, with Sally giving an overview of their vital work as they mark 50 years of supporting women. We were honoured to hear survivor Katherine share her incredibly brave story too and how she was helped by the charity.

We were also moved by Hooked on Harmony choir, who performed a powerful rendition of “Speechless” from Aladdin.

Hornsea RUFC Ladies and we at Hornsea WI are proud to say that last night marked the beginning of a long-term partnership between our groups. Together, we also hope to build a White Ribbon legacy here in Hornsea – encouraging local sports clubs, organisations and community groups to become White Ribbon accredited and join us in saying loud and clear that violence against women and girls will not be tolerated in our town.

A huge thank you to all the organisations who attended (tagged where possible). Please do tag yourselves if we missed you – the room was busier than we ever expected!

• Hornsea Rugby Club
• Hornsea School & Language College
• Hornsea Nursery School
• Hornsea Benefice serving the people of Hornsea, Atwick & Skipsea
• Hornsea Methodist Church
• Hornsea Town AFC
• East Riding of Yorkshire Council
• Preston WI
• Hornsea Dolphins
• Pilates with Ro

Thank you again to everyone who gave their time, support, and voices. Together, we can create change.

Humberside Police were proud to join the Hornsea WI where PC Osler delivered an empowering talk on ending men’s Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) and supporting those affected. By raising awareness, educating our communities, and standing united, we can help keep women and girls safe.

On average by the time our awareness event on violence against women and girls takes place a week today another 2 women will have lost their lives.
Help to recognise how it starts, where it starts and what you can do to help the 1 in 4 women who are affected by domestic abuse in their life time.
*figures from Office for National Statistics data into domestic abuse in England and Wales, in the year ending March 2023.

In a change from our advertised speaker for this month we now have Clare from Salt Revive coming to join us tomorrow at our November meeting.
We welcomed claire around 5 years ago to talk about her journey and the benefits of salt therapy. This time Clare will also be bringing her mobile treatment pod for those who want to to enjoy a taster session - a good way to keep those colds at bay among other benefits!
Visitors are always welcome to come along to (Visitor fee £5 plus £1 for refreshments incl homemade cake).
We meet at Hornsea Methodist Church with doors open from 7.15pm (ish) for a 7.30pm start.
