Lovely to see the sun yesterday and lots of you at the cafe. We were joined by Isabel Underwood from the Alzheimer’s Society. She soon joined in and helped by handing out the information leaflet about the beach hut in July and the form for ordering your fish and chips. When she left, she told me that you are a lovely and friendly group and she looks forward to coming again.

For those going next week, we are meeting at the hall at 11.30 to arrange lifts for those who need it and for me to give the drivers the directions for how to get there. If the weather stays like this, it should be a lovely afternoon.

Our beach hut week is from 11th-17th July, with our seaside special on the 15th, when we will have fish and chips and entertainment by the Shanty Lasses. The hut will be available during this week for anyone who wishes to join us and I have attached further information in this email.

Once lunch was over, Lynsey organised a game of musical bingo, with songs from Disney films. The first person to win a line was Janet 👏🏻 then it was onto a full house. Unfortunately it soon became apparent that everyone was waiting for the same song so we decided to declare that everyone was a winner. You’re all winners anyway.

Then it was onto the bowling, so you were divided into Red and Blue teams and the competition began. It was fairly close most of the way through, but then the blue team had a couple of really good rounds and so at the finish it was Reds-740 and Blues-820. Well done the blues.

Our next regular meeting is on July 1st, when we will be entertained by The Mere Jazz band, so get your dancing shoes on💃🕺.

Good morning everyone. Reminder that it’s cafe day tomorrow and amongst other things, we will be playing musical bingo. 🎼. Look forward to seeing everyone 😊

LISTEN UP EVERYONE-
We have been invited to Rise Walled Garden on Wednesday 24th June to pick strawberries 🍓. I know it is not a usual cafe day, but I thought we could take advantage of the invitation and take an afternoon tea with us.

However, the caterer needs at least two weeks notice of numbers, so if you are interested in going on the 24th, please let me know ASAP so we can get the teas ordered.

The gardens are about 15 minutes from Hornsea so we are asking you to make your own way there, however there will be lifts for anyone who doesn’t drive or can’t make their own way there. This is something we can organise at the next meeting on the 17th if enough of you are interested in going.

Please let me know as soon as possible as I think this could be a lovely afternoon out.🍓🍓🍓

How lovely to see so many of you, despite the not so summery weather. I’m sure many of you got caught in the showers.

Firstly, a thank you to Stephen and our visitor Jaydon, for helping us out yesterday as several of our usual volunteers were busy with other things.

It was a very chatty session when people arrived, lots of catching up and moving around of people, poor Jaydon moved several times to allow members to sit with their friends. Finally, with everyone settled, we sang happy birthday to Stephen and to Geoff (who was not here this week), before tucking into yet another superb lunch. Thank you to John for the lovely iced cake he brought for us to share.

Once lunch was over, I handed out new contact forms, which also contained a “Getting to Know You” sheet, so that we could get to know a bit more about your likes and dislikes and what things are important to you.

We then went around the group, asking about information on where you were born, first job, what music you liked and more general questions like whether you preferred dogs or cats, coast or countryside, favourite food and drink. One question was, what is your favourite biscuit? Turns out almost everyone loves a custard cream 😉. Good choice, although there were a few chocolate digestives and even Garibaldi and fig rolls thrown in as well.

You really are a wonderful group of people, with past occupations ranging from, secretary to sales director of large machinery for golf courses and football pitches; to making carpets, working in hospitals as midwives and helping people with learning disabilities; to research technician, working in a bakery or a fruit shop or for a newspaper.

Several of you had been in the forces and been overseas to places like Gibraltar and Libya and one lady actually met her husband whilst in the RAF. When it came to favourite place to be, it ranged from Austria, Spain, Chile,Barbados, Corfu and the Atlas Mountains to The Lake District, Whitby and even Celtic Park. However, it seems that to many of you, Hornsea is the best/ favourite place to be ❤️.

It was such a great session, listening to everyone’s stories, so much so, that we overran by at least half an hour, but it was definitely worth it. We now know so much more about each of you.

Our next session is on the 17th June and I will be going around to find out how many of you would like to visit Hornsea museum and have tea in the garden (weather permitting).@@@

Good morning everyone. Cafe tomorrow for more good company and a getting to know you session. We may have a couple of visitors too. Look forward to seeing you there.

It was a relatively quiet cafe yesterday after the exuberance of the Shanty Lasses at the last session.

I tried very hard to keep secret the fact that it was my birthday, but it seems others had different ideas. Thank you all very much for my lovely card and for singing 🎶 happy birthday to me. Then it was onto the serious matter of lunch, which soon disappeared, after which I went round with birthday cake for those who wanted some.

Once everything was cleared away,Lynsey led, to music, a nice gentle exercise session to get everyone relaxed. We were visited by Damian Murphy from A Good Life with Dementia and even he joined in with the exercises.

Then Stephen very kindly did a question and answer session, all sorts of categories for people to choose from, individually and not in teams and then finished with a few jokes, mostly from Stephen. Thank you to Lynsey and Stephen for taking the session for us.
Our next cafe will be a “getting to know you” session, as we have some new members, and I am trying to arrange for Hornsea Ukulele group to come in the not too distant future.

I hope you all have a good Bank holiday weekend, looks like the weather is going to be a scorcher and hope to see you all on Wednesday 3rd June.

Good morning everyone. 👋🏻 A reminder that Lynsey will be taking you through some exercises at the cafe tomorrow and Stephen will be hosting another of his famous quizzes. ( Don’t forget to bring one joke with you). We will also be hosting Damian Murphy from A Good Life with Dementia. Look forward to seeing you all there 🤗.

Fire & Rescue Service
Test It. Share It. Save Lives.

Keeping people safe at home is everyone’s business. During Dementia Awareness Week, it’s a timely reminder of how important practical safety checks can be.

A working smoke alarm on every floor can double the chances of surviving a fire. We’re encouraging everyone to take a few minutes to test their alarms to make sure they are working and sounding properly and, where possible, to support relatives, friends or neighbours who may appreciate help checking theirs.

Sarah Wilkinson, Head of Prevention, said:
“Quick safety checks during visits to relatives or neighbours can make a real difference. Making sure smoke alarms are working is one of the simplest and most effective steps we can take.”

As your local fire service, we offer home fire safety advice. You can also use the link below to check if you’re eligible for a free Home Fire Safety Visit.

Well, what a fantastic and rousing session today. The Shanty Lasses certainly livened things up with their wonderful sea shanties. By the time everyone had finished lunch, the Shanty Lasses were all set up and ready to go. What a wonderful selection of sea songs they gave us, including-Spanish Ladies of Spain, Three Fishermen, Sailor, Skye Boat Song, Sail Away Ladies and Drunken Sailor. It was fantastic to see you all singing and clapping along.

Once we had thanked the lasses, I announced that when we have our meeting at the beach hut in July, the Shanty Lasses will be coming to entertain us on the promenade while we eat our fish and chips.

At our next session on May 20th, Lynsey will again lead an exercise session and Stephen will be doing a quiz. He has also asked if you could all bring one joke with you. Damian Murphy will also be paying us a visit to find out how people found the last sessions of A Good Life With Dementia.
