Shed things making things!

There is something going on at Belisily Letchworth Rainbow Kids Cafe , the local children's cafe, Letchworth institution and the Shed's across-the-street-neighbour. Not entirely sure what the project is - announcements are coming - but we are tickled pink to be supporting them with our things (our Ben was also pretty thrilled that owner/operator Loz immediately identified him as a man in need of a slice of delicious lemon cake - how did you know, Loz??) . The Shed exists for exactly this kind of project. And, it turns out, we as a team are here big time for a bit of suspense - roll on those updates, and send pix!

The more party options, the more parties!

Eurydice got in touch about her brand-new Party Kit hire, located in central Hitchin, and it looks AMAZING. Plates, cutlery, jugs and more, along with decoration packs, for up to 50 people. The Shed's long-term followers (hello there you - looking good! You done something to your hair?) will be familiar with the two party kits we lend out, one in enamel and one in decorated recycled plastic, with 12 sets of plates and cups each (alongside the tables, water urn, gazebos, etc). Your shindig might be expecting more than 12 people, though. You might need cutlery, or jugs. Or ours might just be already booked out. In which case, Hitchin Party Kit has got you covered. This is another way we as a community can dodge all that nasty plastic-covered paper partyware that fills up multiple black bin bags straight after the event, and we are HERE. FOR. IT. Check the page out here https://www.facebook.com/Hitchinpartykit .

This face might be familiar..
..if you ever pop into the Shed midweek. This is Tony, a man of many hats, one of which is regular Shedder. And, as it turns out, his collection includes the cap of self-taught clever clogs. During downtime in his shifts, Tony's only gone and learned how to design (using 3D software) and print (using the Shed's 3D printer- still doing a great job making parts for repairs, by the way - love you, Corygroup 🥰🥰!). This fab cogs-and-gears doo-hickey is a concept Tony has been mulling over for ages, apparently, and he's pretty pleased to have access to the kit to build it. We're all sorts of chuffed too, because, how fab is this?

If you've got an idea in mind, and you know your way round a design program, get in touch - the Shed's printer is available at minimal costs (more info on our page about it here https://thebigfix.co.uk/3d-printing/ ). And if you don't know anything about 3D printing but you'd like to, keep an eye on our messages. The Beginners How To classes are in development. There will be more local cleverness ahead, and we are HERE FOR IT.

Big Fix Highlights!

Honestly, we could fill an entire week of posts with the amazing work done by our clever and charming Fixers (Rachel, Jeremy and Peter, we'll get photos of you on the socials at some point - consider yourselves warned!).
Last Saturday brought us an especially wonderful range of people's treasures to repair. A giant clock! An heirloom rug! A doll house (worked on by Jeremy - told you there were too many pictures to choose between)! The toy dog that walks and barks again after Roger sorted it out! Consider our cockles warmed.

Fancy picking up a new skill?

The expertise we've found locally just by poking around a bit - safe to say our flabbers have been well and truly gasted! Thanks to clever locals who are up for sharing their expertise (hello there, Crafty So and Sews team 👋🥰), we can share not just things, but skills at the Shed.

So, are you at a loose end (knitting pun!), Thursday next week? Are you hankering to learn how to knit? Then grab a place for some one-on-one instruction and support, why don't you! The session is from 6pm till 9pm, the 11th of June, £5 to cover materials. Your inner superhero's day is coming!

Or inner Jedi, or Woodland Fairy... whatever/whoever you've got inside, Comic Con is for you/them. And the Shed might be able to help with the outfit for you both. Check out the Arts and Crafts section of the catalogue (or the DIY collection, depending on what you're working with) and book what you need for those finishing touches. And by Thor's hammer, how lucky are we as a community to have this cracker of event right in the middle of town? Big shout-out and loads of community faces with hearts for eyes 😍😍😍😍 to the people making happen. Proof that not all heroes wear capes (but they definitely can if they want to, June 27th).

When you need it...
..you really need it - specialist kit like this panel hoist for installing ceilings and drywall. How good are these photos at showing exactly what it does, by the way? (Thanks so much for the pix, Jack). And while we're asking questions, is the hoist the perfect example of a Shed item? Even if you were doing all the ceilings in your house, you'd only use it for a week or two. It would be expensive to buy your own, and you'd have to store it, squeezed into the spare room alongside the exer-cycle and Chrismtad tree. So much cheaper and easier to borrow it for a bit instead! And because we're a community with a Shed, and because lovely Jamie carried this in to donate it (thank you Jamie!), you can absolutely do just that.

Figuring it out as we go along...

We're finally doing what everyone else in the world does (took us a while!) and taking payment when our things are booked. It's a small change, but it's going to make a big difference when you come to pick up your thing. No more queuing for the card terminal! From June 1st you'll be able to pop in, say hi to the Shedders, and then you and your thing can be on your way home, to whatever project of event you've got going on.

We're also hoping this tweak will help borrowers remember to cancel bookings if their plans change. Lately we've had more and more things left uncollected at the end of the Shed day. It's gone from a hitch to an actual proper problem. Other borrowers have been blocked from booking the things, which then just sit in the Shed, unused - and our things love to be busy!

So, from June 1st, payment will be taken when the thing is booked. You can cancel online, call or email, and the fee will go onto your account for the next time you borrow something (if you'd prefer a refund to your card, you can get in touch and arrange it with a manager - these have to be entered manually into our system).

Once the actual pick-up day rolls around, the thing has been located, pulled out of storage, set aside near the front desk, and other borrowers have been blocked, so the fee becomes nonrefundable (like a hairdresser and cancellations made on the day). If your plans go sideways, no worries - give us the heads up, cancel the booking before the pick-up day, and all will go swimmingly. This small change will make a huge difference in keeping the Shed ticking over smoothly, our stock in use, and as many people as possible enjoying the things. Happy things, happy borrowers, happy Shed.

..and second sharpener Gareth,..
.and session manager Laurence, and Shedders who kept the borrowing ticking over, and all the people who brought in their shears/ lawnmowers/ scissors/ knives. Last Saturday was a busy, noisy, worky, chatty day, and we love those! It was such a good time, and the team got so much sharpening done, they're now thinking of doing it more than once a year. Watch this space for updates 👍👍
