Heads up and look lively, people...
..two events in the calendar and approaching fast!

Next Saturday is the drop-in demo session for the Shed's thermal imaging camera. This is a proper bit of tech, available to borrow from the Shed, that can help pinpoint where heat's being lost. It works best when you've learnt how to operate it and understand its readings. So we're truly grateful to the good people of Decarbonise Letchworth for running this session and sharing their know-how. No bookings necessary - just pop in between 10.30 and 2.30 next Saturday at the Shed and follow the voices giving solid, clear sustainability advice.

Also in the Shed diary is the last Big Fix of the year, Saturday 28th of November. Bookings, though, close on the 16th, so grab a slot for you and your dodgy lamp/ torn jeans/ wobbly stool/ broken bracelet while you can. Our marvellous team of Fixers (hi Team 👋🏻👋🏻and go on, you know you are), will do their best to bring your thing back to life. Then you two can look forward to the Christmas break together

All repairs are free, although we are always deeply grateful for any donations towards keeping the Big Fix ticking over. Find where the heat's going...
..with the Shed's thermal imaging camera, a really proper bit of kit. It was a big investment, ans we are really chuffed that we can make this tech accessible to our community.

Winter's coming, and utilities are expensive. Being able to find where the heat is leaking at your place means you'll be able to pin down the next steps that are going to make a difference.

The team from Decarbonise Letchworth will be at the Shed, Saturday the 14th, from 10.30 am to 2.30 pm to show you how the camera works and answer all your questions about tracking down the heat loss in your home. This has become a yearly event, and we're so grateful to these sustainability-focused, community-spirited people for running this free drop-in session and sharing their know-how. Come along, have a chat and a fiddle with the camera, and you'll be tracking down the leaks at home like a pro in no time.

Oh YES - this is happening!

The equipment's been gathered, the skills have been sharpened, our volunteers are raring to go.

If you're even a little bit curious about these cracking crafts, why would you miss the chance to see them in action and demo'd on kit that you can then borrow? YOU absolutely wouldn't. You're much savvier than that. We bet you've had Saturday the 24th from 11 - 2 ( tomorrow) in the diary for AGES. (Although if this is the first you're hearing of it - welcome! Happens to us all the time! 😆😆)

We are looking forward to seeing you all, early-planners and wandering-past-what-is-that-now? people alike, tomorrow at the Shed, no matter what the weather!

Clever Shedder, SPOOKY window!

Shout-out to Louise, who has become our go-to window display person - brava and GET YOU, Louise! We might bang on about it, but the Shed really does have the best volunteers (and hello to you all, Team Shed). The witch riding one of our most popular items, the Kärcher UK carpet cleaner (so good, we found funding for 3 of them) is brilliant. If you stop to admire it when you're next in to pick up or drop off a thing, (the detail! The Halloweeny glee!) we totally get it.

This time next week...
..and we are just a little bit over-excited. The kids' left-handed scissors (for the borrowable felt-craft kit) arrived last week, along with the flat Lego pieces (what do you mean, you haven't printed with Lego? You should DEFINITELY come along), and the trial runs of the Sissix machine have created some properly gorgeous cards.

Like most things the Shed does, this is an experiment. Lending out craft kits and items is a new direction for us. So the skilled volunteers who are giving their time and expertise next Saturday are not just community-spirited, they're really game as well - that up-for-it spirit is so Sheddy! So, colossal thanks and big hugs of admiration to our Demo-ers for the day - Shedder and Crafty So and Sew Lindsey, Julia from our town's residents group http://lalg.org.uk/letchworth-residents, Chris from local design agency , and Jaya from Letchworth's own streetwear maker . Change of Plans!

We have had another 'learn by doing' week at the Shed, that's for sure.

Our screen-printing expert Chris (from local design agency rinda ) took the new kit home, had good play around and discovered that it's not as first-time-user friendly as the marketing would make out. Oh no! We don't want our borrowers taking home kit that's too complicated to get the results that they were expecting - happy borrowers is our whole thing!

So we thought on our feet (this is something we do so often at the Shed, it's now like a very mild super-power) and had a re-plan.

Firstly, at the drop-in day on the 24th, Chris will be demo'ing block printing instead of screen printing. The card making and felt craft are locked in and lookng good, so there will be a lot of really gorgeous options and loads to see and learn.

Secondly, for everyone who was looking forward to getting into screen-printing (and this includes us), Team Shed are still dedicated to developing this idea! Discussions are underway to supplement the kit with everything it needs, and to run training sessions to ensure borrowers know exactly what they're doing. It will happen, just a bit later than we'd hoped.

If you were really looking forward to the roll-out of the screen-printing kit, same here! This is a pivot, not an end of the road. And it's nice to be on the road together with our community - thanks Team, we'll see you on Saturday the 24th, from 11am - 2pm.

Clever Kelly!!

LOVE a borrower photo ❤️❤️ Kelly used one of our number tins to make this gorgeous cake for her son's birthday. The cake tins were donated by Letchworth's Women's Institute, which sadly is no more. But their kindness lives on, in cake form, available to all our borrowers - surely one of the best, or at least yummiest, ways to be remembered? Thanks Kelly for sharing these pix with us, and a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHAMP - BEING SEVEN IS SO MUCH FUN to your son, from Team Shed.

Going BIG on crafts!

Get it in the diary - Oct 24th at the Shed, 11 till 2pm, our drop-in how-to demo day for the new (and new-ish) craft equipment. Partial to a bit of paper-craft? Fascinated by felt? Been keen on screen-printing? Then come along on the 24th, see the kit in action, chat to the demonstrators and see what you might fancy giving a go. All the equipment will be up on the catalogue and available to borrow the next week.

A lot of our things are for cleaning/ DIY/ gardening and events, but we LOVE supporting crafts in our community. An event like this is always a team effort, and this big event has needed a big team . So many email chains! So much wrangling!. Tips of the hat and thank yous then to the people who funded the items - .co.uk for the felt craft kit, STEAM Arena for the screen-printing equipment, a unknown donor for the Sizzix machine (love a bit of mystery) and Kim for the collection of Sizzix templates. Huzzahs and hugs are also due the volunteers demonstrating the craft bits. Jaya from local streetwear geniuses Snů Wear is sharing her felt-making skills. Chris from Letchworth's own design business Artystar is showing what the screen-printing kit can do. And our own Shedders (hooray!!) Lindsey and Julia have spent time getting familiar with the Sizzix machine, and are now ready to show you what they've learned. (Community) teamwork making the (craft) dream work!
