An Admiral from our area. Will a future Very Senior Officer come from our Ship’s Company?

On 20 August 1967 AFAIAA the only naval officer, to date, to have commanded three Royal Navy aircraft carriers, Vice Admiral Jeremy Paul ‘Jerry’ Kyd CBE was born in Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire.

Educated at King’s School Macclesfield and Southampton University, he joined up as a Seaman Officer in 1985. After Fleet training, his early years were spent at sea as a Bridge Watchkeeper, he specialised as a Gunnery Officer, but also rained as a Navigator. He became Principal Warfare Officer (PWO) in various ships. Operational deployments to the Gulf, Kosovo, Caribbean, Baltic, Indian Ocean and wider Atlantic followed. After promotion to Commander in 2004 his first command was the Type 23 frigate HMS Monmouth. On promotion, he became the last Captain of HMS Ark Royal in 2010, moving to her sister HMS Illustrious the following year, before coming ashore as Captain of BRNC Dartmouth in 2012.

In May 2016 Commodore Jerry took over from Simon Petitt, the Senior Naval Officer of the new carrier Queen Elizabeth, and on commissioning became the ship’s first Captain (wearing the Royal Navy rank of captain while retaining the substantive rank of commodore, following historical custom). Promoted Rear Admiral in November 2018, he was appointed as Commander United Kingdom Maritime Forces and Rear Admiral Surface Ships. As Vice Admiral he became Fleet Commander in March 2019, responsible for commanding all operational elements of the Naval Service, and acting as Joint Commander for the North Atlantic operating areas. Appointed CBE in 2019 he retired from the service in March 2022, to become Lieutenant-Governor of the Bailiwick of Jersey.

Another great night on river. Lovely to see Cdt 1st Thomas using his newly acquired full rowing Cox’n ticket (thanks to Sea Cadets Oxon and Bucks District Summer Camp) to full effect & a very relaxed Cdt Robert at Lazy Bow!

It’s been fun watching the coots extending their nest too 😊

Congratulations to Rithvik & Kyle who were advanced to Cadet First Class, and to Cadet Robert who finally received his Basic CIS (Radio) badge and certificate having taken the course earlier on the year.

A fantastic thing about Cadets qualifying as PTIs is that the RMCD can now do the PT part of the syllabus on a regular basis.
