We had a lovely social evening at Whitfield WI, getting creative and making poppies for a very special reason. ❤️

Some of our ladies even took the plunge into knitting and crochet, learning new skills and doing a brilliant job. Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? 😉

Our poppies will be used to decorate the benches we donate to the village for Remembrance Day, helping us create a fitting tribute to remember and honour the brave men and women and animals who have served and sacrificed their lives in conflicts. The red poppy is a symbol of remembrance, hope and respect for all those affected by war, purple for animals.
And, of course, no Whitfield WI evening would be complete without food! This was also the start of our Soup Dragons supper season, when the soup pots come out and we warm ourselves up over the colder months. There was plenty of chat, laughter, creativity and a lovely sense of togetherness. A great night was had by all, and we even managed to produce something meaningful along the way!

💃 The Jolly Dollies hit Newcastle!

What a fantastic night out at Boulevard in Newcastle with the Whitfield WI girls! The show was absolutely AMAZING… funny, fabulous and just the right amount of s**t 😂

We laughed, we danced we had a brilliant time. The company was fabulous, as always.
Whitfield WI really does know how to have a good time! We’re not just about monthly meetings and crafting, but yes to cake, because no one can beat our suppers; we’re about friendship, laughter, nights out, adventures, and making memories with a super bunch of girls.

The weather is looking good so why not pop along with your furry companion to entry the fun dog show enjoy some lunch at either the wonderful Fish & Chip Van or the amazing Whitfield WI ladies for some yummy sandwiches and cakes at the village hall all polished off with a refreshing b**r at Paula’s bar.
The children can have fun playing on the rides and all can be entertained by the fantastic bubble man to be watched by adults and children! They will be here all day for you to come and blow some amazing bubbles.

What a fabulous evening we had at our latest WI meeting with the wonderful Meredith Towne, Costume Historian and Costume Maker.

Meredith was not only incredibly knowledgeable, but also hugely entertaining, taking us on a fascinating journey through fashion, costumes and the stories behind them. There were plenty of interesting facts, fabulous outfits and, of course, a few moments that had us chuckling along the way. 👗🎩

It was also lovely to welcome guests from Haydon Bridge, Langley and Alston WIs. It’s always great to see new faces and have a good old natter with fellow WI ladies from across the area.

And naturally, no Whitfield WI meeting would be complete without the usual fabulous Whitfield spread. There was enough food to suggest we were feeding the entire North Pennines rather than just ourselves! 😂🍰🥪

A huge thank you to Meredith for such an entertaining and fascinating evening, and to everyone who came along and helped make it such a lovely night.

A Fascinating Evening at Slaley WI 🎩✨

A few photos from last night’s fascinating talk at Slaley WI, where we had the pleasure of hearing from Margaret Woodliff Wright, The Northumberland Milliner.

Margaret designs and creates couture hats, and she gave us a wonderful insight into the skill, creativity and craftsmanship behind millinery. She explained the different techniques and materials she uses and showed us some of the traditional hat blocks used to shape and create particular styles of hats. Some of the blocks even came from her early days of learning the craft.

Margaret’s work has taken her well beyond Northumberland. She has travelled to competitions in both the USA and Australia, where she has enjoyed considerable success, winning competitions along the way. Her work has also been worn on some very special occasions, including a hat she made for Dame Chi Onwurah DBE for her investiture.

She has also created hats for fashion student Lamin Gibbs’ runway show, “Shy Bairns Get Nowt”, showcasing the wonderful combination of traditional millinery skills and contemporary fashion.

We were also treated to a lovely showcase from Margaret’s student Helen, who brought along hats she had created during the various courses she has attended with Margaret. It was a fabulous opportunity to see how students can develop their own skills and creativity under Margaret’s guidance.

A fascinating evening celebrating craftsmanship, creativity and the wonderful art of millinery, and perhaps a few of us left wondering whether every outfit really does need a fabulous hat!

The Whitfield Girls Take on the Toon!

The Whitfield girls were out on the Toon last night, and what a brilliant evening we had!

We started the evening with some refreshments at Bella Italia Newcastle before heading off for a fascinating guided walk around the city with Helen from Adventours.

Our chosen tour was “Votes for Women”, exploring the story of the Suffragettes in Newcastle and the remarkable women who fought for the right to vote. Helen’s passion for the subject really brought the stories, characters and events to life. It’s amazing how much history is right under your feet when you know where to look!

If you haven’t experienced one of Helen’s Adventours yet, we would definitely recommend one for your meeting meeting, we have had 2, they’re informative, entertaining and a wonderful way to discover Newcastle from a completely different perspective.

And, of course, we had picked a rather eventful night to visit the city! . It was eclipse night, so Newcastle was buzzing, the streets were busy and the evening was wonderfully warm. There were plenty of interesting characters wandering around, some fascinating sights to see, and just enough people-watching opportunities to keep the Whitfield girls entertained! 😂

There really is something special about a trip into the city. You come home having learned something new, seen something interesting and, most importantly, spent a lovely evening together.

Another fantastic Whitfield WI night out, good food, great company, fascinating history and plenty of laughs along the way. ❤️
