Urban Roots

Urban Roots Urban Roots is a community led organisation working across the Southside of Glasgow.

We are committed to working with local people on projects that improve the environment and health of the area through a range of activities including community gardening, conservation and biodiversity, and planet friendly living. Our work aims to inspire people and communities to connect with nature, and take practical action that tackles the root causes of climate change. Our volunteer teams take

on lots of different projects such as transforming derelict or unused green spaces into thriving, blossoming community gardens where herbs and vegetables, fruit and flowers can be grown.

We've had a lovely few months running a gardening group up at Orchard Care Home led by our fab facilitator Fi.
The residents have enjoyed lots of planting, sowing and making seed cakes!
Thanks to Toyglen Medical Practice for funding this much appreciated project. Green prescribing is something we hope to see a lot more of in Glasgow!

Our conservation volunteers check the Malls Mire trail cam on a weekly basis to find out what mischief the three new fox cubs have been up to.

DID YOU KNOW! The collective noun for a group of foxes is a skulk!

We've noticed them becoming increasingly confident: coming out of their den more often and for longer periods of time. They are frequently play fighting which establishes a social hierarchy, helps them develop crucial hunting skills and improves their physical coordination and build... until the cubs are fully independent and disperse to find their own territories in early autumn, at about 7 months old.

This week's visitors to Malls Mire woodland - our conservation volunteers recently installed a trail cam to see what wildlife is passing through the woods - and we're delighted to find a fox inhabiting an old badger sett and roe deer making themselves at home. 🦊🦌😍

Just a wee reminder that we have our community litter pick tomorrow morning - meeting at Malls Mire shipping container next to Toryglen Community Base. Hot drinks and biscuits after! We have had some really bad flytipping in the last few months in the nature reserve and really need your help to keep it looking beautiful!

It may be pouring again today on and off but there are still bright, sunny signs of spring around Malls Mire Nature Reserve. Especially lovely seeing the marsh marigolds in the wetland areas as well as cowslip & primula dotted around. So lucky to have such bonny nature on our doorstep!
