This week our adult volunteers were busy weeding the community raised beds, spreading our first batch of compost made with our Jora composters, and planting lots of lovely root veggies!

Spring is here so there will be lots more planting to come! πŸ‘€

What a glorious morning our volunteers had with both P3 classes this morning in the sun. They moved bark into the willow maze, cut cardboard to suppress the weeds in the raised beds & mulched the fruit trees to keep them clear of weeds. What fun and hard work! Well done all.

Gardening Club has been lots of fun these past few weeks with a little more light in the evenings and lovely sunshine today. We planted two plus trees, emptied one of the Jora composters & added soil to the raised beds ready for planting. We also enjoyed picnics and rides in the barrow!!

Come along and join us Tuesdays 3-4pm.

With tools and help from Dams to Darnley Country Park's Ranger Rennie, we gave our willow it's annual hair cut last week. This encourages the willow to grow stocky and strong rather than tall and thin. Rennie and Wei Ling wove some branches together to help encourage the tunnel effect to develop. There's still some work to be done but a fab start

P6/5, P5 & P5/4 joined us and worked with their teachers to weave stars and fish. 🌟 🐟

Tuesday's workshop was an exciting one helping Sowing Seeds roof our compost shelter giving us a chance to practice our practical woodwork skills including drilling, hammering and sawing.

This shelter will protect the Jora hot composters from the elements, prolonging their lifespan and will also act as a rain collection surface for our sustainable watering system for the allotment. Exciting times.

The rain cleared by 3pm and our gardening club had muddy fun tidying up and refilling the barrels by Mr McGougan's bench and planting some flowers. We also started a tidy up on the sensory garden. Join us every Tuesday 3-4pm. We meet at the office after the bell rings, enjoy some snacks outside and get dirty working in the grounds. 🌱 🌱 🌱

Our SALTIRE group was very disappointed this morning not to be able to hold our pupil workshops due to the persistent heavy rain. But our waterproof-clad volunteers drowned their disappointment by turning the compost and finding lots of worms and mini-beasts in there working their magic. This compost, made from from school & household food waste in our Jora hot composters, is looking fabulous and almost ready to be spread on the raised beds.
