Around 60 sailors, pirates and fisher-crew turned out for Shepway Voices’ Sea Shanties Night last week… and that’s not even counting the pet parrots that somehow made it through the door... ⚓️🦜

We had a brilliant evening singing traditional songs that once helped sailors pull together as a crew. A few choir members even brought guitars along, and we were delighted to welcome some new faces, as well as a few returning ones too.

Sea shanties night was a bit different from our usual Wednesday evenings. Normally we sing a real mix of music - from pop and folk to gospel, traditional songs and classic choral pieces.

If you’ve ever thought about joining an adults choir and would enjoy singing with a friendly bunch while supporting your wellbeing, come along and give Shepway Voices a try:

📍 FBC Centre, Hill Road, Folkestone

🕢 Wednesdays, 7.30–9.30pm

There’s a suggested £5 donation for those who are able, but we don’t let cost be a barrier to entry and we’re proud to be a community choir for everyone.

We also have Shepway Primary Singers, Shepway Youth Voices and Headstrong, who all meet on Mondays.

Drop us a message if you’d like to know more! 🎶

Thanks to Jody, Chris & Makala for pics!

Ahoy! This week Shepway Voices is celebrating its coastal roots with a Sea Shanties-themed rehearsal night! ⚓️🎶

With nautical favourites like Wellerman and Drunken Sailor - plus a few more jaunty numbers thrown in - we’re gearing up for a lively evening of music, harmony and questionable pirate accents.

If you fancy joining us this Wednesday, come along to the FBC Centre on Hill Road in Folkestone, 7.30–9.30pm. Some of us may be dressed as sailors, pirates or mermaids… but don’t let that put you off.

While this week’s rehearsal is a bit different, we normally sing a wide mix of music - from pop and folk to gospel, traditional and classic choral pieces.

We’re a free community choir for the community in and around Folkestone & Hythe and welcome all adults (£5 donation from those who are able).

Drop us a message if you’d like to know more - or just come along this Wednesday, or any Wednesday throughout the year! 🌊

Some say Shepway Voices feels like a second family… and for John and Makala, it really is family time! 💙

Makala joined during lockdown, when the choir stuck together through online meet-ups and singing sessions that helped everyone stay connected. Three years ago, her dad John followed her in… and they’ve been singing together ever since.

They each have their favourite tunes. Makala loves the powerful Let the River Run, while John’s top pick is Only Remembered - a special one for the chaps/ lower voices. 🎶

Makala puts it beautifully: “Shepway Voices gives us the opportunity to share our love of music and singing. Choir nights are a chance to spend quality time together, and we get to perform in some pretty cool places, which is really special. It’s also a wonderful social outlet for us both, and we’ve made some great friends.”

Makala and John aren’t the only family members in the choir.

We’ve got a grandmother and granddaughter duo, partners, cousins, and plenty of friendships that have grown from people coming together to sing, support each other, and have a good time.

We love that we’re intergenerational - we think it makes a better, more supportive community.

If you love singing and you’re looking for something welcoming and down-to-earth, come and join us!

We’re a free community choir for adults (with a suggested £5 donation if you’re able), meeting Wednesdays at 7:30pm at the FBC Centre, Hill Road, Folkestone.

Drop us a message if you’d like to know more - we’d love to hear from you. 🤗

Wednesdays = singing + socialising! 🎶 👩🏽‍🤝‍👩🏻👨🏿‍🤝‍👨🏻

☕️ At Shepway Voices, a big reason we love our Wednesday nights is the chance to meet people and build lasting friendships. Our mid-rehearsal tea & coffee break helps with this! This pic is of two of our lovely members - Charlotte and Katherine - catching up over a cuppa.

👉 If you want to sing, boost your wellbeing and build friendships - come and join us! Katherine, Charlotte, and the rest of us will be here to welcome you! If you’d like to chat to anyone before you come, drop us a message and we’ll get back to you.

📍 We meet on Wednesdays, 7.30pm, at the FBC Centre on Hill Road, Folkestone. Our rehearsals are free to the community, with a suggested donation of £5 from those who are able.

🎶 Shepway Voices is one of four free community choirs. We also have Shepway Primary Singers, Shepway Youth Voices and Headstrong - our singing group for people and their families affected by brain injury.

🤗 As always, with heartfelt thanks to the individuals, supportive local businesses and trusts who help us keep community singing a much-valued, accessible activity for all.

It took Shepway Voices just 10 minutes to learn this little “Spring Round” and we’ve combined it with spring pics from our choir members. We even convinced some local birds to get involved…

Song: Bridget Cousins
Singing: Shepway Voices
Chirping: Birds of Stelling Minnis, Kent

If you like to sing, come and join us! We’re open to anyone over 18 and we sing on Wednesdays, 7:30pm - 9:30pm at Folkestone Baptist Church on Hill Road.

We’re one of four free community choirs for people in and around Folkestone & Hythe and enjoy a wide variety of songs from pop to folk, gospel, traditional choral and gentle rounds. Message us if you want to know more, or just turn up - we’d love to welcome you!

We loved singing at Turner Contemporary in Margate to celebrate 25 years of Kent Community Foundation supporting community-focused organisations like us.

The audio in this vid is from “Let the River Run” - a Shepway Voices fave, and the piece that closed out a wonderful evening!

If you love to sing, come and join us! We sing a whole range of pieces from contemporary pop to folk, classic choral, a bit of gospel and even the odd sea shanty. The variety keeps it interesting… the friendships we form keep us coming back.

Singing is good for the soul and we’re proud to be a free, accessible community choir for those in and around the Folkestone & Hythe area - with gratitude to those organisations and individuals who support us financially.

You’ll find us at Hill Road Baptist Church in Folkestone every Wednesday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. We’re looking forward to welcoming you 🎶.
