There is no greater embodiment of state failure that the PM spoke of when taking office, than the fact 14million people are food insecure

“This government must act now, put in place immediate relief measures and then work towards ending food insecurity once and for all by legislating to have a right to food.”

Andy Burnham is being urged to end the scourge of hunger across Britain with a string of measures including universal free school meals.

Just a few days to go until the launch of our findings at Labour Party Conference.

Over the last year, we've received an incredible response from civil society, academics, practitioners, trade unions and most importantly people with lived experience.

The scale of engagement has been incredible. The Commission carries a huge responsibility and the report we are about to publish shares that responsibility. Food insecurity cannot be understood in a few pages or solved with recommendations that speak to symptoms whilst ignoring the systemic causes of food insecurity.

We always said the work of the Commission would address the systemic causes: inadequate social security, failings in social care, unaffordable housing, poor health, discrimination, insecure work and rising essential costs driving up debt.

Communities and people with lived experience haven’t just provided evidence to the Commission - they have helped shape the questions we asked, the issues we explored and the solutions we have proposed.

The launch of our report at Labour Conference is not an end point, but a milestone on this journey, so please attend if you can: 29th Sept from 8.15 at Love Lane Brewery
