Tommy Kane of UNITY Consulting Scotland has been supporting this excellent initiate - let’s hope the new Prime Minister is paying attention and takes action to address the appalling levels of hunger and food insecurity we see

Last night we presented the UK Parliamentary Commission on the Right to Food's initial report to MPs, alongside powerful testimony from people with lived experience.

The evidence is overwhelming. Hunger in the UK is not caused by a lack of food, but by political choices that leave millions without enough income to live with dignity.

The cost of poverty to our society is enormous. It places huge pressure on the NHS, education, social care, local authorities and our economy. Putting the Right to Food into law is not just the right thing to do morally it is an investment that will reduce those long term costs and build a healthier, fairer and more productive society.

Parliament now has a choice continue managing poverty, or legislate for the Right to Food and end food insecurity for good.

This is about justice, accountability and ensuring no one goes hungry in one of the richest countries in the world.

It's time to act.

It was great to support this campaign

Now that the dust has settled and the decision has been made, We want to say a huge thank you to everyone in our community and the neighbouring communities. This was your victory.

We're relieved that the SFRS Board today came to what we firmly believe was the only right decision to leave Lochgelly’s existing fire services untouched.

However, there is a caveat. The Board acknowledged that communities in Methil and Glenrothes were not consulted on the new “Option 3”, which would see Lochgelly retain two pumps.

We find this strange as if you remember, at the public meetings, SFRS officers pulled this option out of the air and offered it, despite not being on the official review documentation.

Because of this, SFRS is now legally required to go back out and consult again in those areas. So for now, we’ve secured a deferral and that is entirely down to the incredible campaign led by Lochgelly’s firefighters the wider community, surrounding communities, their Community Councils including Lochgelly Community Council.

Everyone involved should feel immensely proud. We are proud to have backed this campaign and our community from day one.

We all understood the stakes. The removal of an appliance would have left Lochgelly exposed to unacceptable risk and would almost certainly have meant the loss of our highly trained rope rescue unit.

We continue to believe that fire chiefs need to look again at decisions made in 2023 around appliances removed from Glenrothes or Methil, but not at the expense of Lochgelly.

At the start of this consultation, We don’t think anyone at SFRS quite realised just how determined and formidable the people of Lochgelly are when they stand together.

They do now.

And I hope that’s enough to make them think twice before ever bringing forward proposals like this again.

Today the board of the Scottish fire and rescue service met to decide which options would be moving into the implementation stage.

The campaigns at Marionville and Lochgelly have succeeded in maintaining the fire cover in their area with the board and top officers of the service listening to our members and their communities and not implementing these proposals. The same cannot be said for Hawick fire station with the proposals to reduce 24/7 fire cover to day time cover only to go ahead.

Our members still believe this to be a dangerous proposal, removing the only guaranteed 24/7 fire cover in a huge rural area will have an impact on that community. We will not roll over easily and let this happen. We have seen that we have the community and our politicians behind us and we will fight.

There are many more cuts being made across the whole country, I encourage all members to attend their local branch meetings and support the campaigns to save their fire service.
