Lough Erne Yacht Club

Lough Erne Yacht Club LEYC - Lough Erne Yacht Club, Established 1818 on Lower Lough Erne, County Fermanagh. Ireland oldest

Lough Erne YC is the oldest sailng sport organisation in Ireland, directly descended from the body that first organised racing sport in sailing boats in 1820. Race HQ at first on Inisdoney, moved to Rossclare, then in late 1800s Crom on the Upper Lough. Between the wars LEYC sailing sport was more active again on the Lower Lough, likewise after WW2 set up by 1960 in Gublusk Bay, where our start an

d finish line has been in used for over 80 years past, as are our race mark positions. LEYC occupies a former WW2 RAF site built in early 1941 for Catalina Flying boats, at Gublusk Bay, Lower Lough Erne, Fermanagh. Two of these aircraft famously 'spotted' Bismarck, leading to her sinking in May 1941. Officers Mess was today's Manor House Hotel, and our concrete shoreline was laid at that time also. The former slipway, off-shore moorings and hangar are now used for members' sailing boats, power boats and caravans. The Clubhouse, with changing rooms, bar and social facilities was built in the 1960s & 1980s. A marina containing berths with full water and electricity was completed in 1992.
