So after collecting a very sick owlet and hedgehog I was heading home when I got a call from Jade to say she had secured a mother duck and ducklings in the fenced in yard behind Belmore Court Hotel, I had literally driven past her a few seconds before the call. I went round the block and parked. After lots of crawling through bushes and chasing ducklings we managed to catch the mother duck and four ducklings.

Many thanks to the lovely Jade, her lovely mother, the motorists that guided us when ducklings evaded us and to Shannon who spotted the last duckling that was making a break for it across the busy intersection.

They were all released on the Lough at Ardhowen. Of course the fourth one had to do it the hard way and go through the reeds before popping out and joining the others.

This little duck got to go back to the wild today, after a relatively short stay at Dooletter. She had minor injuries to her head and a few drowning attempts by excitable male suitors.

She recovered her strength and her injuries cleared up nicely so she was fit and well to go back today.

As you can see she wasn’t sticking around for any long goodbyes.

On Tuesday night we got a call about a bird stuck in a hot press. Initially the bird could be heard flapping about and when they opened the hot press it was lying sprawled on the floor. It turned out to be a swift.

The lovely young woman got the swift to Sam who checked it for any injuries and to get some rehydration and a tasty wormy / crickety meal before being released back to the wild the next day.

Swifts winter in Africa travelling 6000 miles to escape European winters, and feed on insects in the warmer climes. They stay airborne during this time eating and sleeping on the wing and return to Europe to breed in Spring. They nest in crevices in older buildings or special nesting boxes that people provide.

Thank you to Sam for caring for it and to Amie for helping release it, this was her first release. Hopefully she will get to help with many more.

⚠️ WARNING - GRUESOME IMAGES ⚠️

This poor hedgehog is on its way to the vet so that its suffering can be ended.

This is caused by a strimmer!!

As soon as the sun comes out the frantic mowing and strimming starts causing unbelievable damage and ultimately death to these poor creatures.

Please at least check under hedges and bushes to make sure that there are no hedgehogs there for you to strim their faces off.

Every year rescues around the country have to deal with awful injuries caused by strimmers and mowers.

Is your garden worth this?

This is NOT a criticising post at all, it is a reminder to check and cover all drains, etc, including cattle grids.

This poor hedgehog was found in a stopcock hole which had accidentally been left open at some stage. As you can see from the photos he has been trying to climb or dig his way out and has worn down the nails on both front feet. This is a common occurrence in hedgehogs found in cattle grids.

Luckily there was no water in the hole, and he is a bit dehydrated, thin and mucky.

The hole has been covered and lessons learned. He was brought to me by the lovely young couple who found him. Fingers crossed he will be back to full health again shortly.

Here are some of the baby birds that have needed help over the last couple of days, many thanks to Mark for making the long journey to drop off the wood pigeon squab, a causally of a felled tree; Diana for collecting, transporting and warming up the 4 robin nestlings whose mother didn’t return, possibly a cat victim; Sam for transporting the wagtail and Hilary for warming and transporting the starling chick that she found on the street while walking her dog.

These are only a few of the latest arrivals, over 70% of the young bird casualties currently here are the result of cat attacks. Please keep your cats indoors as much as possible, especially early morning and early evenings. Bells might work for adult birds but they definitely don’t work for nestlings or hatchlings. The only sure way is to keep them indoors away from the birds.

This little sleeping stoat got left behind when his mother moved his siblings after being disturbed.

He was initially discovered with a sibling so was left but she didn’t come back after moving the other sibling. He was ice cold and not moving and was thought to be dead. Thankfully after being warmed up he was ready for a feed.

Another one back to the sea, this time a little razorbill that was found weak and starving on Murvagh beach surrounded by other dead seabirds that weren’t that lucky. They were all very thin, the rough seas make it very difficult for them to find food.

Please call +447730404991 if you find any weak birds on the beaches.

Many thanks to Lesley, Isobel and Rhi for getting this little lady back on her feet.

This little fox cub was found lying with the sheep by a very kind lady, she was extremely weak and not moving when she got her to Sam.

After initial first aid treatment she was taken to MiNight Vets where she was brought back to her lively little self.

** No sheep were injured **

Over the last weeks we have had calls about dead birds on the beaches as well as very weak ones.

Brian has been doing a sterling job collecting, feeding and getting them ready for release.

All the birds were found to be extremely thin and starving, and readily willing to eat as much fish as they can be provided with.

Thanks to George at C-Fish for helping us with the fish; thanks to Brian for all your work in getting them ready to go back and thanks to everyone who notified us or who rescued the birds.

Here are 2 very happy Guillemots going back to the wild. The others are still eating up a storm getting ready to go back to sea.
