Having a sleep issue is surprisingly common. At any given time up to 40% of adults and 50% of children (this rises to 80% with a SEND diagnosis) have difficulties with their sleep. Yet in a recent survey, almost 60% of adults felt there was a lack of support for sleep issues - leaving people feeling isolated and lonely.

Cue our National Sleep helpline run by a team of specialist trained sleep advisors. Although we cannot give medical advice, we can talk through your issues, offer you some practical strategies and recommend services that could help.

Call us on 03303 530 541 between 9am and 11am on Mondays – Thursdays and between 7pm and 9pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The Holiday season is upon us and while we love a break away, the disruption in our routine can sometimes be difficult to overcome.

Suffering from jet lag when travelling is very common - even if the time difference is minor. It occurs when your internal body clock is out of sync with the local time at your destination. Crossing time zones – especially eastward – can cause fatigue, irritability, poor concentration, and difficulty falling asleep at night.

So we've put together some top tips to stop summer stealing your snoozes:

Can you feel that lovely sun? The holiday season is upon us – it’s time to unwind, explore new places, and spend quality time with family and friends. While your days may be fun-filled, the nights can be a different story with the heat causing you to toss, turn, and struggle to get enough rest. ...

Who struggles to sleep when in summer? Fortunately, there are several effective strategies to help you stay cool and comfortable.

Create a Cross-Breeze: Open windows and doors to encourage air circulation.

Use Fans Strategically: Place a fan low to the ground where cooler air resides. For an added cooling effect, position a tray of ice in front of the fan to mimic an air conditioner.

Block Out Sunlight: Keep curtains or blinds closed during the day to prevent your room from heating up.

Ventilate Your Attic: If you have an attic, open the hatch to allow rising hot air to escape.

Lightweight Bedding: Opt for a low tog duvet (around 4.5) or just a cotton sheet.

Natural Materials: Breathable materials like cotton or bamboo for sheets and pillowcases are perfect for keeping you cool.

Light Cotton Nightwear: You might not believe it but wearing light cotton pyjamas can be cooler than sleeping naked – the cotton wicks away sweat.

Shower Smart: Take a lukewarm shower about 60–90 minutes before bedtime to help your body cool down naturally.

Cool Compresses: Apply a cold flannel before bed to pulse points like your wrists and neck – reducing your temperature before bed can make it easier to fall asleep.

Drink Water: Consume cold water throughout the day and keep a glass by your bedside at night.

Limit Caffeine and Alcohol: Both can dehydrate you and raise your body temperature, disturbing your sleep during the night.

Cold Water Bottle: Fill a hot water bottle with cold water and place it in your bed.

Chilled Pillowcase: Put your pillowcase in the fridge before bedtime or consider using a cooling pillow.

Cool Socks: Wearing socks that have been chilled in the fridge can help lower your body temperature.

Invest in Cooling Products
Cooling Blankets: Consider using a cooling blanket made from materials like bamboo or specialised cooling fabrics.

Cooling Mattress Toppers: These can help regulate your bed’s temperature.

Sometimes, amid the busy days and long to-do lists, we're reminded exactly why our work matters.

We have been working with Tees Valley Education and this week, a parent shared with a reporter how support around sleep and a bed from Zarach became a lifeline for her family. She spoke about the excitement it brought into their home, the sense of calm it created, and the difference it made for her child with SEND.

Before receiving support, exhaustion had become overwhelming. School felt harder to face, daily life felt harder to manage, and sleep deprivation was affecting the whole family. Through support from a Sleep Champion and the dedication of those who went above and beyond, things began to change.

Then came the words that stopped us in our tracks:

"I feel like a new woman."

Those six words capture the power of what happens when people are given the support they need. To everyone working to tackle sleep inequality, supporting families, and helping people access better sleep – this is your impact.

Never underestimate the difference you make. ❀️
