A good evening at WI with Ailsa Hunt, telling the story of her remarkable, determined Grandpa, Arthur Denley, who overcame a terrible misfortune at only 21 when he contracted polio. He went on to have his own adventures on his motorised trike, including travelling into the Alps. Then he spent his life pioneering the development of cars for disabled people and their families, giving them real independence and this led to the founding of the organisation Mobilise, of which he was president.

Really entertaining and useful evening at West Hallam WI. Cam from Community 1st Volunteers gave an excellent talk on emergency care and demonstrated CPR and use of a defibrillator.
He was very good at answering all our questions and is keen to do talks to other local groups young and old.

On the second day of Christmas (well December) ...... the West Hallam Village postbox topper went up, created by members of the WI. Post your cards and enjoy the beautifully made story. Merry Christmas from the W.I.

Poppy Cascade at West Hallam
This weekend, in West Hallam, a great cascade of more than 6,000 poppies has appeared at the Village Hall in a display for Remembrance Day. Knitted and crocheted poppies have flooded in from all around our area and from as far afield as America. Masterminded by Janet Wainwright it has been a really lovely community effort with WI members sewing the poppies onto huge nets and the help of a local business to install it.
As it has been so well supported we thought it would be a good idea to put out a collecting box with all contributions going to the British Legion in appreciation of those who lost their lives in conflicts. We hope you will come and enjoy this spectacular display.

On September 9th we had an excellent visit to Leicester centered around King Richard III. We enjoyed an interesting talk at the Visitor's Centre before seeing the very high tech and engaging displays. After lunch we had a guided tour of the cathedral focused on the new stained glass windows of Richard's story, his tomb of Swaledale fossil limestone and the beautiful embroidery created for his funeral pall.
