The Isle of Man is going to see some very severe thunderstorms in the next few hours. There’s definitely a slim chance some of these could head our way overnight. All those + symbols are lightning strikes!

Christ on a bike! An orange thunderstorm warning issued by Met Éireann. The heat will be gone by completely by Saturday. Currently there’s a huge number of lightning strikes off the south coast of Wales. It’s unlikely wells see them but a few could nske it to Counties Waterford, Cork and even Wexford. We could get some thunderstorms towards Friday.

RTÉ News has reported that Ireland (the southern bit😉) has now set a new all time high temperature for May of 30.5°C recorded at Clare. This beats the earlier record of 29.7°C in County Carlow. Temperatures are lower the further north you go. It’s unlikely we’ll have any records broken this time in County Down. We can always pride ourselves of the record high at Ballywatticock of 31.2°C back in July 2021.

Record high temperatures?

There’s certainly a good chance of the all time May temperature record getting matched of surpassed in the next few days. The all time high temperatures for the island of Ireland in May are:

Kilkeel County Down recorded a maximum of 28.3°C on 26th May 1922.

Ardfert Liscahane in County Kerry reached 28.4°C on 31st May 1997.

No doubt Barra Best will get the information out before the rest of us sees it!

Weekly forecast 25/05/2026

From Monday until at least Thursday we can expect dry, sunny and very warm conditions for pretty much everywhere. Hot may conditions are possible in places today and tomorrow as the current warm spell peaks.

On Thursday showers will develop with a few very heavy downpours possible. There’s also an increased risk of thunderstorms as cooler Atlantic air moves back in. Cooler and unsettled into next week.

24/05/2026

That’s definitely salad weather outside today.

Weekend forecast 22/05/2026

A cloudy start to Friday with a few bright spells. However rain will arrive by afternoon with some heavy bursts at times. It will clear overnight.

From Saturday onwards things look dry and sunny. Temperatures could reach 24°C by Tuesday. There is a threat that coasts could be impacted by sea fog keeping things cooler.

Staying dry until for the rest of the week. The extreme long range is showing a return to rain around the beginning of June. Far too early to say but take advantage of a dry week if you can.

Weekly forecast 18/05/2026

Monday will start cool but temperatures are finally going to recover. Dry but cloud will build with rain arriving by this evening. This will be the start of milder Atlantic air moving in from the south west.

Tuesday to Friday looks like scattered showers and sunny spells. The showers will be heavy in places and some places might miss them altogether.

Temperatures generally up to 15°C by day and no lower than 10°C at night. The heating can finally be switched off.

Looking towards next weekend. High pressure is set to build in over us. There’s a good chance of some warm and sunny weather for the bank holiday weekend.
