FOLLOW MOBY DICK THROUGH THE STREETS OF FISHGUARD…

Our next Ar Ymyl y Tir 2026 On Land’s Edge announcement is the moment that will officially set this year’s festival in motion and we want the whole community to be part of it.

On Friday 25 September, a spectacular MOBY DICK LANTERN PARADE will make its way through Fishguard, celebrating the remarkable connection between Fishguard and Goodwick and the filming of John Huston’s Moby Dick here in 1954.

The brilliant team at Small World Byd Bach are creating a huge Moby Dick lantern to lead the parade, joined by dozens of handmade ‘fish and ships’ created by local schoolchildren, families and members of our community.

🐋 One enormous white whale.
🏮 A fleet of glowing fish and ships.
🌙 And the streets of Fishguard coming alive as festival weekend begins.

📅 Friday 25 September
🕖 7:00pm
📍 Starting from Ysgol Bro Gwaun
⏱️ Approx. 1 hour
🎟️ FREE - come and join us!

And if you’d like to carry your own sailing ship lantern in the parade, there’s still time to join one of our public Lantern Making Workshops on Saturday 19 or Sunday 20 September.

This is how Ar Ymyl y Tir 2026 On Land’s Edge begins.

With a whale. With lanterns. And with our community taking to the streets together. 🐋

🌊 Some stories belong to a place.

Ahead of this year’s Ar Ymyl y Tir / On Land’s Edge, we’re delighted to welcome a very special evening to Theatr Gwaun - one that connects Fishguard, the sea, Hollywood history and one of cinema’s great adventures.

JOHN HUSTON KNEW MY FATHER: MOBY DICK AND OTHER FISHY TALES

Bill Hamblett of Small World Theatre shares the extraordinary story of his father, Hollywood screenwriter Charles Hamblett, whose experiences around the making of John Huston’s Moby Dick inspired his novel The Crazy Kill.

It’s a tale that takes us from the Pembrokeshire coast to Hollywood, with memories of Gregory Peck, John Huston and even a rather unexpected connection to John Lennon along the way.

And somehow, it all feels wonderfully at home here.

With this year’s Ar Ymyl y Tir / On Land’s Edge drawing inspiration from Moby Dick and from the landscape, stories and communities of Fishguard and Goodwick, this special Ein Hanes event offers the perfect introduction to a festival rooted firmly in our own sense of place.

🌊 Mae rhai straeon yn perthyn i le.

Wrth i ni edrych ymlaen at Ar Ymyl y Tir / On Land’s Edge eleni, rydym wrth ein bodd yn croesawu noson arbennig iawn i Theatr Gwaun - un sy’n cysylltu Abergwaun, y môr, hanes Hollywood ac un o anturiaethau mawr y sinema.

JOHN HUSTON KNEW MY FATHER: MOBY DICK AND OTHER FISHY TALES

Bydd Bill Hamblett o Small World Theatre yn rhannu stori ryfeddol ei dad, y sgriptiwr Hollywood Charles Hamblett, y bu ei brofiadau o amgylch y gwaith o wneud Moby Dick gan John Huston yn ysbrydoliaeth i’w nofel The Crazy Kill.

Mae’n stori sy’n mynd â ni o arfordir Sir Benfro i Hollywood, gyda chofion am Gregory Peck, John Huston, a hyd yn oed gysylltiad annisgwyl iawn â John Lennon ar hyd y ffordd.

Ac mewn rhyw ffordd, mae’r cyfan yn teimlo’n berffaith gartref yma.

Gyda Ar Ymyl y Tir / On Land’s Edge eleni yn tynnu ysbrydoliaeth o Moby Dick ac o dirwedd, straeon a chymunedau Abergwaun ac Wdig, mae’r digwyddiad arbennig hwn gan Ein Hanes yn cynnig cyflwyniad perffaith i ŵyl sydd wedi’i gwreiddio’n ddwfn yn ein hymdeimlad ni o le.

AND SO IT BEGINS… 🌊

Over the next few days, we’ll be revealing the programme for Ar Ymyl y Tir 2026 On Land’s Edge, one event at a time.

And where better to begin than with the memories of the people who were here when Hollywood came to Fishguard and Goodwick?

THE MAKING OF MOBY DICK: AN EXHIBITION OF MEMORIES

In 1954, Fishguard and Goodwick became one of the most important locations for the filming of John Huston’s Moby Dick.

More than 70 years later, this special exhibition brings together memories, stories and photographs gathered from the local community - preserving the recollections of those who remember that extraordinary year and the mark it left on our towns.

As part of the project, Mike Lewis has been out and about gathering those memories and photographs, working closely with Hanes Abergwaun and Ein Hanes to help preserve this remarkable piece of our local heritage for generations to come.

📍 Martha’s Gallery, Theatr Gwaun
📅 From 1 September 2026

Graphics for the exhibition have been designed by Julian Jefferson of Fishguard Arts Society, Cymdeithas Celfyddydau Abergwaun, and the project has been made possible by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

It feels like the perfect place to begin our journey towards this year’s festival.

Follow us over the next few days as Ar Ymyl y Tir 2026 On Land’s Edge gradually comes to life…

ARDDANGOSFA CREU MOBY DICK: ARDDANGOSFA O ATGOFION

Ym 1954, daeth Abergwaun ac Wdig yn un o’r lleoliadau pwysicaf ar gyfer ffilmio Moby Dick John Huston.

Dros 70 mlynedd yn ddiweddarach, mae’r arddangosfa arbennig hon yn dod ag atgofion, straeon a ffotograffau ynghyd a gasglwyd o’r gymuned leol - gan ddiogelu atgofion y rhai sy’n cofio’r flwyddyn ryfeddol honno a’r argraff a adawodd ar ein trefi.

Fel rhan o’r prosiect, mae Mike Lewis wedi bod allan yn y gymuned yn casglu’r atgofion a’r ffotograffau hynny, gan weithio’n agos gyda Hanes Abergwaun ac Ein Hanes i helpu i ddiogelu’r rhan arbennig hon o’n treftadaeth leol ar gyfer cenedlaethau’r dyfodol.

📍 Oriel Martha, Theatr Gwaun
📅 O 1 Medi 2026

Dyluniwyd graffeg yr arddangosfa gan Julian Jefferson o Gymdeithas Gelfyddydau Abergwaun, ac mae’r prosiect wedi’i wneud yn bosibl drwy gefnogaeth Cronfa Dreftadaeth y Loteri Genedlaethol.

Mae’n teimlo fel y lle perffaith i ddechrau ein taith tuag at ŵyl eleni.

Swamptalk return to west Wales from the US and across the UK performing their blend of jazzy, funky blues.

Swamptalk first came together in West Wales in the late ’70s and’80s. They performed locally and further afield, releasing a single, ‘Positive Movement’ in November 1979 (to a glowing review in the Tivyside Advertiser!)

Decades after their first gigs at The Shed in Dolwilym, original members Bruce Knapp - guitar, Paul Bennett - bass, and Consi Handelsman – vocals, will be travelling from New York, London and elsewhere to perform at Small World Theatre. They'll be joined by drummer Geoff Nicholls, percussionist Phil Layton, singer Carolyn Burnett, and perhaps a surprise guest or two.

The band has deep musical connections with the Preseli landscape, and made lifelong friendships. This night of performance and dancing will explore those roots and refresh the connections that are tattooed on their hearts and minds.

We’re extending the entertainment by offering three 10-min Open Mic slotsat the beginning of the evening. Please get in touch with Helene to register your interest and book the stage!
