The Mastermind (12A)

Kelly Reichardt | 2025 | USA | 110’

The film is a crime story set in a 1970 Massachusetts suburb, focusing on JB Mooney (Josh O’Connor), an unemployed carpenter who plans an art heist that goes wrong. The film is described as a “quiet study of one man’s decisions and their unforeseen outcomes” and an “aftermath film” that places the heist early in the narrative, exploring its consequences. The story draws inspiration from real art heists of the era.

Stori drosedd yw’r ffilm hon, wedi’i lleoli ym maestref ym Massachusetts ym 1970, ac yn troi o gwmpas JB Mooney (Josh O’Connor), saer di-waith sy’n cynllunio lladrad celf sy’n mynd o chwith. Caiff y ffilm ei ddisgrifio fel “astudiaeth dawel o benderfyniadau un dyn a’u canlyniadau annisgwyl” a “ffilm ôl-effeithiau” sy’n gosod y lladrad yn gynnar yn y stori, gan archwilio ei ganlyniadau. Mae’r stori’n tynnu ysbrydoliaeth o ladradau celf go iawn y cyfnod.

Rydym yn dilyn stori Aurora, mudwr o Bortiwgal sy’n gweithio mewn ‘ganolfan gyflawni’ enfawr yng Nghaeredin, yn dewis nwyddau i’w cludo. Our next film screening is ‘On Falling’, the critically acclaimed debut of director Laura Carreira, exploring the human cost of online shopping.
We follow the story of Aurora, a Portuguese migrant who works in a giant Edinburgh based ‘fulfilment centre’, picking out goods for shipping. Aurora tries to navigate this life on the edge that threatens both her humanity and wellbeing, seeking out opportunities for respite and resistance. An intense and powerful film which carries great resonance for the algorithm-driven economy we currently live in.

Tonight's screening is "I'm Still Here". Based on a true story, director Walter Salles's Oscar-nominated film follows the impact of a political abduction in 1970's Rio de Janeiro. When Eunice Paiva's husband is taken, she and her five children are left reeling - the consequences playing out over decades.

Brazil, 1971. The country faces the tightening grip of a military dictatorship. Eunice Paiva, a mother of five children, is forced to reinvent herself after her family suffers a violent and arbitrary act by the government.

Our screening tomorrow night (Sunday 23rd March) is Soundtrack To A Coup D’Etat. Crackling with energy & verve, the film masterfully rewrites the Cold War episode that led protesting jazz musicians to crash the U.N Security Council and creates an audacious musical documentary. Featuring Louis Armstrong, Nina Simone, Dizzy Gillespie and Malcom X. The film starts at 6:30pm

Our Annual General Meeting will take place on Sunday 23rd March, starting after our screening of the riveting documentary Soundtrack to a Coup D’Etat, a melange of 60s jazz and global politics. The meeting will be in-person and will take place at Mwldan , lasting approximately 30 minutes.
It’s open to all members, so whether you’re a full member or a Ticketsaver please come along. We’d love to hear your feedback and suggestions, plus we’re always on the lookout for new committee members!
