Caerphilly Hedgehog Rescue Our Mission is to support the Native UK Hedgehog population, by Rescuing, Rehabilitating and Releasing sick, injured or orphaned hedgehogs back to the wild.

ABOUT US

Founded in September 2021. Caerphilly Hedgehog Rescue is a volunteer led, not for

profit organisation that operates across Caerphilly County Borough, Cardiff and the Valleys. Our Mission
• To support the Native UK Hedgehog population, by Rescuing, Rehabilitating and Releasing sick, injured or orphaned hedgehogs back to the wild.
• To prevent cruelty to hedgehogs and safeguard them from unnecessary suffering.
• To educate and network with the public concerning the safety and welfare of hedgehogs.
• To follow the current written UK National guidance as determined by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society and the Vale Wildlife Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre.

Alfie came to us at the end of April. He was found out in the day, being pecked by birds. He had an eye injury and internal parasites that required treatment and attention.

Alfie made a full recovery and went on his way at 1090g!

We are extremely busy in our rescue at present with all sizes of hedgehogs coming in, not just the little ones, and our spaces are filling up rapidly.

Due to this we are a little behind on posting new admissions so please bear with us. 👀😩

Meet Hannah!

Admitted from the Llanishen area in Cardiff on 07/06, 779g after being found out in the daytime looking disoriented and wobbly on her feet.

After an assessment Hannah was dehydrated and emaciated, had a mild case of ringworm which has been successfully treated and had a small injury to her face now healed. We also think she may be pregnant.

She’s currently weighing in at 944g and is coping well with the heatwave. Her carer is making sure she’s got plenty of fresh clean water, her pen is sat on a cooling gel mat and she has a fan in the room to help keep her cool.

We hope to release her in around a week’s time (weather depending) back to the area where she was found.

RELEASE: 08/06

Remember Morty? He came to us at the end of April having likely been bitten by a dog. He had two, big infected abscesses that required attention and also received treatment for lungworm and roundworm.

Morty made a full recovery and went on his way at 1100g.

Meet Harry ! 🦔🩷

Admitted from the Cwmbach area on 06/06, 1kg after being found out in the daytime and not moving.

After an assessment, Harry was a good shape and size just very dehydrated on arrival.

Faeces were screened to show a parasite burden of Crenosoma (Lungworm) which was treated and a few ticks removed.

Sub cutaneous fluids and pain relief were given.

Harry was released back to one of our lovely support gardens on 21/06.

Meet Shadow ! 🦔🩷

Admitted from the Cwmcarn area on 06/06, 358g after being found out in the day in the street.

After an assessment, Shadow was cold, dehydrated and emaciated on arrival and placed in our incubator. He has a patch of nonreactive spines see pic possibly nerve damage in that area.

Faeces have been screened to show parasite burdens of Capillaria (roundworm) and Fluke.

Antibiotics, sub cutaneous fluids and pain relief have been given.

He is eating well and now 3/4 through his treatment plan and progressing well.❤️

Meet Leela !

Leela was admitted from the Blackwood area on 04/06, 668g. She was found out in the day in the finder's garden.

After an assessment, Leela was in a collapsed state on arrival - very dehydrated and emaciated. She had damage to her forehead and nostril and was missing a toe on the right side (possibly a strimmer injury).

Her faeces have been screened to show parasite burdens of Capillaria (roundworm) and Coccidiosis.
Antibiotics, sub cutaneous fluids and pain relief have been given.

She is progressing well and is now over 700g.

Meet Stuart !

Stuart was admitted from the Energlyn area in Caerphilly on 04/06,148g. He was found out in the day, no mum or siblings around.

After an assessment, Stuart was found to be a little dehydrated and emaciated. He's around the 3wks mark, toileting on his own and has been receiving specialist formula milk and puppy mousse to help him grow strong and healthy.

No parasite burdens detected. He's progressing well and now a juvenile at 259g.
