Marton Mere Local Nature Reserve

Marton Mere Local Nature Reserve Marton Mere Local Nature Reserve is a reedbed and lake area on the outskirts of Blackpool. It is managed by Blackpool Council and volunteers.

Marton Mere Local Nature Reserve is located 3 miles west of Blackpool Town Centre covering approximately 160acres of grassland, scrub, reeed bed and open water habitats. The site is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Local Nature Reserve (LNR) for its importance for wildlife. The site is most well know for it’s bird populations with 260 species recording including yearly

records of long-eared owl, cettis warblers, reed buntings, water rail, little grebes, and large numbers of waterfowl such as teal, gadwall and shoveler. However Marton Mere is also important for diverse range of plants and other wildlife species such as otters, great crested newts and a variety of dragonfly and butterfly species. The site is owned and managed by Blackpool Council who are currently undertaking site improvement works funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Veolia. The project is a partnership between Blackpool Council, BEAT NatureWatch, Fylde Bird Club and Bourne Leisure who run the adjacent caravan site.
