At a recent election hustings in Brindleyplace, seven candidates set out their visions for the city, answering questions on key issues including road safety, waste services, the economy, and division in Birmingham.

During the event, Birmingham Race Impact Group CEO Lorna Shaw asked how candidates plan to unite the city, strengthen community cohesion, and celebrate Birmingham’s rich multicultural identity.

Here’s what they had to say…

We’d also like to ask our followers: how would you “Unite the People” of Birmingham?

This Easter weekend, a time rooted in hope, renewal, and standing up for what is right, we’re inviting you to be part of something bigger.

On 2nd May – International Workers’ Solidarity Day, we launch Unite the People Festival.

At a moment when the far right try to use faith and identity to spread division and hate, we’re choosing a different path—one of unity, justice, and collective strength. The values at the heart of Easter aren’t about exclusion—they’re about love, dignity, and standing together against injustice.

This weekend, take a stand:
Buy your ticket. Bring your friends. Be part of a movement that brings people together across communities, cultures, and beliefs
Because when we unite, we are stronger.

Join us on 2nd May, 6pm – 10pm

We’re proud to share this powerful conversation with Siobhan Harper-Nunes — consultant, founder of BRIG & Shakti Women, and a lifelong advocate for equality and inclusion.

From supporting equality training for magistrates in the 1980s to leading the Birmingham Black Oral History Project, Siobhan has spent decades preserving stories, challenging injustice, and creating opportunities for others. As a senior leader within Birmingham City Council, she also championed fair pay and better support for Black staff.

For over 20 years, she has worked alongside charities and social enterprises to strengthen and diversify income streams — with a particular focus on supporting Black women-led and marginalised communities.

As the founder of Shakti Women, Siobhan continues to empower women through business, professional, and personal growth.

Through Seeking the Pioneers, we’re inspiring a new generation to document and share the stories shaping our future.

We’re proud to share this powerful conversation with Dr Robert Beckford — pioneering scholar, broadcaster, and leading voice in Black Theology and racial justice.

For over three decades, Robert has combined academic research, grassroots activism, and media to challenge racism and drive social change. From founding Black Theology programmes and supporting generations of Black scholars, to award-winning documentaries exploring reparations, faith, and justice — his impact is both national and global.

Through his work across universities, prisons, churches, and television, he continues to reimagine how theology and media can be tools for empowerment and transformation.

Through Seeking the Pioneers, we’re inspiring a new generation to document and share the stories shaping our future.
