Meet Ted 🐈
Handsome Ted arrived in our care last week.
His owner reached out to us to say they were really struggling with Ted's behaviour, which had been described as violent, and they believed he may be feral.
They explained that Ted had caused damage within the home and that both members of the household had been injured by him, but it didn't take long for us to realise there was more to the story.
After we went out to assess Ted, it became clear that there were factors within his home environment that were having a significant impact on his welfare and behaviour 😥
As we got to know Ted, it was apparent that there were underlying reasons behind the difficulties his owners had been experiencing.
We won't go into too much detail, but Ted had not been able to comfortably express many of his natural feline behaviours, which was having a clear impact on his wellbeing.
When we met him, Ted came straight over to investigate us, accepted some gentle fusses and happily enjoyed a Lick e Lix treat. We could see that he was worried within his surroundings and is naturally a cautious boy who can be easily startled.
After speaking with his owner, we explained that we felt Ted would settle well at the sanctuary, despite initially thinking he may struggle based on what we had been told. We didn't have a space available immediately and have had to squeeze him in when we are already full, but we felt his welfare needed prioritising and that both Ted and his owners required support 🧡
Whilst Ted had been responsibly neutered and vaccinated, he was not a happy cat in his previous environment.
We often hear the term "feral" used incorrectly. A feral cat is a cat that is not domesticated and actively avoids human contact. They do not seek out people and generally fear human interaction.
Since coming into our care, Ted initially hid away and seemed quite nervous. However, in a very short space of time, he has started coming out of hiding and is now enjoying cuddles, affection and playtime. He is proving to be a very sweet and loving boy who simply needs the right environment to thrive.🥰
Please can we politely ask for no negative comments!
Ted's story shows just why rehoming checks are so important. We often hear that rescues are too strict, but our policies and assessments are in place for a reason: to protect the health, welfare and wellbeing of the animals in our care and to ensure they are matched with environments that meet their needs.
Ted will be having a vet check this coming week and, all being well, will soon be ready to start his search for a forever home once we've had a little more time to get to know him.
One thing we do know already is that Ted is not a fan of the great outdoors! Being outside makes him very worried, so he will be looking for a safe and secure indoor-only home 🏠
Keep an eye out for more Ted updates 🖤🤍
