Just when we thought the final pumpkin had gone in… My Mum arrives with another 20 plants, looking very pleased with her surprise delivery.

All grown from my own Halloween pumpkin from last year too — clearly she’s helping me in my mission to expand the Gressenhall pumpkin patch one stealth drop-off at a time.

Fingers crossed we’ll have an even bigger harvest to share with you all this year 🌱🎃

The season has been off to a fabulous start with hands‑on demonstrations from the Flax & Fleece Project. Visitors to Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse have been able to explore the full journey of flax processing that the team has been developing over the past few months — from raw plant to soft, workable fibre.

These images capture just a few of the traditional tools involved. Flax passes through several stages: one of the most important is the flax breaker, which cracks and removes the woody shive from the stems to reveal the strong inner fibres. Later stages include combing or ‘heckling’, where the fibres are drawn through fine metal teeth to separate, straighten, and refine them — a process that also helps explain the origin of the phrase “flaxen hair.”

A huge thank‑you to everyone who has stopped by to learn more about the Project’s work in reviving historic textile skills.

And good news — the team will be back on Sunday 12th July for more demonstrations.

Pumpkin news from the patch — they’re growing brilliantly! Huge shout‑out to the amazing farm team who’ve been looking after them while I’ve been away.

The vines are thriving, the leaves are stretching, and the pumpkins are clearly loving the attention.

Even better… more seeds have now been planted, and 20 new plants are heading into the ground this weekend. It’s turning into a proper pumpkin takeover.

Autumn is going to be spectacular.

What a day at the Gressenhall Grand Fete!
The Friends of Gressenhall are thrilled to share that we raised £117 yesterday which included another horse sponsorship— a fantastic boost for the museum and its community projects.

Huge thanks to everyone who stopped by, played the duck game, grabbed a BBQ bite, enjoyed the beer tent and soaked up the sunshine with us. Your support means everything.

Join us back at Gressenhall for their Barnyard Bash event on 5th August!

Today is the big day — the Gressenhall Grand Fete is here at last, and the Friends are ready to dive in. I’m thrilled… the others are getting there, but enthusiasm is a journey.

It’s one of the loveliest community gatherings around: smiles, sunshine (we hope), and a well‑earned break from the everyday.

We’ll be hosting our duck game — lighthearted fun, a bit of mayhem, and prizes for the lucky few.

And of course, the BBQ, the beer tent, and the gin bar are waiting for us. I may even part with some actual money, which is practically headline news.

Bring your cameras — today will be one to remember.

Join us for the joy, the fizz, and the full Gressenhall fete glow!

🎃 Calling All Friends of Gressenhall – We Need Your Halloween Decorations! 👻

As we prepare for this year’s Halloween event at Gressenhall, we’re reaching out to our wonderful community for help. If you have any spare Halloween decorations that you’d be happy to donate or lend, we would be incredibly grateful.

We’re looking for items such as:

•Pumpkins & lanterns – real or artificial
•String lights – orange, purple, spooky-themed
•Props & ornaments – skeletons, ghosts, witches, spiders, etc.
•Outdoor decorations – signs, stakes, inflatables
•Fabric & scene‑setting items – cobwebs, netting, backdrops, bunting

Whether it’s something small or a whole box of decorations, every contribution helps us create a magical (and slightly spooky) atmosphere for visitors of all ages.

If you’d like to donate or lend items, please comment below or get in touch with the team at [email protected]

Thank you for helping us make this Halloween at Gressenhall one to remember.
