Sand play is a fantastic activity for young children in their early years. It offers a wealth of benefits and opportunities for learning and development.

• Fine Motor Skills: Children work on their fine motor skills while playing in the sand.
• Sensory Experience: Sand provides a unique texture for sensory exploration.
• Creativity and Coordination: Children learn to use buckets, spades, and develop hand-eye coordination.
• Outdoor Play: Sand play encourages outdoor activity and exploration.

So, whether it’s building sandcastles, digging, or creating imaginary worlds, sand play is a valuable and enjoyable experience for children.

The Importance of Water Play in the Early Years

Water play is a valuable and engaging part of early years provision, offering children endless opportunities to explore, experiment and learn through play.

As they pour, scoop, splash and measure, children naturally develop key skills such as coordination and control, while also building early mathematical understanding through concepts like volume, capacity and cause and effect.

Water play also supports Communication and Language, as children talk about what they are doing, and Understanding the World, as they investigate how materials and substances behave.

Rich in sensory experiences, it encourages curiosity, creativity and collaboration—making it a powerful and enjoyable way to support holistic development across the EYFS.
