Join us today - Sunday 25th October 🕊

Every human life is precious and we deplore the futility of every loss of life -

Grief destroys families without discrimination: whether its an Israeli family losing sons and daughters to this relentless war machine or a Palestinian family losing more loved ones, compounding earlier violent bereavement, we are witnessing a daily mockery of the word ceasefire and of the norms of international law that were set in place to protect us all, as equal humans.

In the face of such profound suffering, it can be difficult to know what difference we can make. This afternoon, we will once again choose to do something small, yet significant: we will stand together in solidarity, in our shared humanity and in hope for a just and lasting peace.

We are so pleased to report that the final total for Bangor Peace Movement's pub quiz supporting Christian Mission to Gaza charity was over £1400! ❤️ We are so encouraged to have raised this amount of money for an organisation that works tirelessly to help people displaced in Gaza. Huge gratitude to all those who generously donated!

We oppose ideological divisions that fuel suffering, and condemn both antisemitism and Islamophobia, affirming our shared humanity.

Children are always innocent, whether they are a Palestinian child, an Israeli child, or a child from Sudan, Congo, Ukraine, Iran, Lebanon or any other conflict zone.
We lament the spread of conflict over the past 3 years.

The world needs peace.

We are calling for an end to the violence that steals our hope for a better future.

We invite everyone to join our peace vigils, to show how widespread this call is, and urge our government to take meaningful action to get aid in now, before more people die of starvation and lack of basic medicines.

The need could not be more urgent.

The Bangor Peace Movement is bringing people from across our community together in weekly vigils, initially spurred by the unrelenting suffering in Gaza.
We are a strictly non-politically-affiliated gathering of individuals from diverse backgrounds. While we hold different beliefs, what unites us urgently in this moment is a shared commitment to humanity and the sanctity of life.

We believe it is vital to create a space here in Bangor where anyone who feels the urgency of this crisis can stand up simply but strongly for humanity.

There is a lot of pressure to “take sides” in a conflict but we say it is incumbent on us all to stand on the side of life, of peace, and of international humanita***n law.

To that end, we avoid flag symbolism and instead emphasise internationally recognised symbols of peace – a dove, candles of remembrance, flowers.

Our aim is to stand against the suffering inflicted on our fellow human beings.
We uphold the core principle of the value of human life.
We promote the principles of negotiation and nonviolence.

Stand with us, any Sunday, 1.30 - 2pm.

I've been reflecting this evening on a small number things I really appreciate about being part of Bangor Peace Movement:

• The sense of solidarity - it is comforting to know that there are others who feel compelled to act (in some simple way) in the midst of such heartbreaking scenes we continually see on our phone screens. It makes me feel less alone.
• The friendships built with others I doubt I'd otherwise have met - a great mix of backgrounds and stories. The conversations are a great balance of encouragement, perspective sharing and well needed humour too!
• The moment of pause we take during the two minutes of silence to remember those who have been affected by the conflicts around the world. It is humbling to be able to do this.

As world leaders gather at the UN in New York this week, the questions of war and peace feel more urgent than ever.

Individuals in Gaza are still being killed every day, one here, two there, despite news outlets still talking about it as a ceasefire. Only half of the hospitals have any semblance of operational capacity, while medical equipment is still denied entry at the border.

Tension with Iran is unresolved, affecting us all and reports continue to show settler violence on the rise in the West Bank. it's difficult to keep up with conflict zones but we believe it's important to hold the same principle for all of them:
More political energy should be put into peacemaking and solutions than into the war machine, which only lines the pockets of the super rich.

We have seen some positive action from the UK government of late and this week the Peace Movement raised over £900 in our Pub Quiz Fundraiser to help cancer patients in a makeshift camp in Gaza City. 🙌

We stand for the principle that every person, regardless of where they are from, has equal value and should be treated with respect and dignity under the same law. We do what we can in our corner of the world, asking our politicians to support diplomacy and peacemaking to bring an end to unnecessary violence and suffering. This world is for ALL OF US and we need to seek a better future together.
