Last night's Chamber Music concert was a great success featuring some of the UK’s top professional musicians performing in Ashbourne.

The programme of music for violin, cello and piano featured two Czech composers – Dvořák, and his younger compatriot Martinů. Alongside this, we heard a beautiful early work by Debussy - his 'Dumky' trio in E minor opus 90.

Caroline Pether (violin) is the leader of Manchester Camerata appearing often as a soloist and director. Dale Culliford (cello) was the sub-principal cellist of the Hallé Orchestra, a position she held for nearly 30 years before leaving to commit her time to chamber music and teaching. Paul Janes (piano) is much in demand as a chamber musician and pianist with top orchestras in the UK including the Hallé and the BBC Philharmonic.

The next concert on November 6th will feature The Hallé principal oboist Stéphane Rancourt performing alongside colleagues Marie Schreer (violin), Chris Emerson (viola) and Dale Culliford (cello).

The programme will include a rarely performed work by Czech composer Jiří Družecký who was a younger contemporary of Mozart. Alongside this will be two English works – a short and rarely heard piece in two movements by Elgar, and a haunting and atmospheric Fantasy Quartet by the Anglo-Irish composer Ernest Moeran. A few other works will fill the programme including a world-premiere for oboe and viola specially composed for the series in Ashbourne.

Tickets are available via the ashbournelink website - link in profile - as well as from Natural Choice on St John Street in Ashbourne (cash only at Natural Choice).

Local residents have organised a screening of the People's Emergency Briefing at The Link Centre on Thursday 29th October.

Free tickets are available here:
https://www.tickettailor.com/events/vivramsey/2404086

The film features footage from last November’s National Emergency Briefing, which brought together leading UK experts in climate science, food security, health, economics, national security and nature.

It presents a clear, measured overview of how the climate and nature crisis is affecting everyday life in Britain, and what the evidence says about risks and responses.

The initiative is explicitly non-partisan and is supported by a wide range of organisations including National Trust, Church of England, Exeter University, the Royal Meteorological Society, WWF, National Education Union, and many more.

The film presents expert evidence on increasing climate-related risks, including flooding, heatwaves, infrastructure stress and systemic disruption.
