15 Years at the helm
After 15 years as Musical Director for Ammanford Town Silver Band, Glyn Davies is stepping down.
The band wishes to place on record it’s thanks and gratitude for an exceptional shift by Glyn. Since 2011 he has led the band consistently and with professionalism achieving many contest successes for the band and taking the band to over 50 competitions, citing performances at National Eisteddfods and appearances at National Finals as some of his proudest moments.
As the face of the band, Glyn has been ever present with the band’s local community engagements which have increased in recent years and the band is now regularly playing on home turf in events in Ammanford and the surrounding areas more than ever.
He has also been a driving force in mentoring many of the younger players over the period who have gone on to become musicians of the highest calibre across the UK.
His time has been one of enjoyment for players old and new over the last 15 years and the band places great importance on an atmosphere of friendship, fun and family – Glyn has been at the core of this. Glyn’s ability to work with players of all ages and abilities has been a huge feature of his tenure as Conductor.
Glyn’s role through Covid lockdown cannot be overstated – bands were not allowed to play together during that period - Glyn arranged for remote rehearsals and recordings, actions such as this meant the players stuck together, were still able to perform with each other, keeping that sense of togetherness – this undoubtedly helped the band coming out of lockdown when so many groups across the UK were closing down, Ammanford Town Silver Band kept going.
The end of this chapter sees Glyn conducting the band at the West Wales Festival of Brass where the band will be performing Diversions – Variation on a Swiss Theme; this is the exact piece that Ammanford Town Siver Band won the British Finals in 2001, 25 years ago, in which Glyn himself was a winning player with the band.
President of the Band, Owain Jones (TRJ) said:
“Ammanford Town Silver Band is one of the oldest organisations in the area still going to this day – Glyn’s musical direction in the last 15 years has strengthened the band, made it more prominent in the community and has developed so many musicians in the area.
Having performed with Glyn and the Band regularly over the years, we all know the enjoyment that is derived from live music, Glyn has made that enjoyment a reality in his role as one of Ammanford Town Silver Band’s longest serving Conductors.
I wish to express my sincere thanks and admiration on behalf of the Band for Glyn’s service over the years – diolch o’r galon Glyn.”
