Abbey Brass is a traditional brass band based in Abingdon, Oxfordshire (registered charity no. 296663). As a charity we provide education and training for young people and adults in the playing of brass instruments, to promote the appreciation and understanding of brass band music and to stimulate interest in the traditional art of brass band playing. In addition to the Main Band, Abbey Brass is a

lso formed of a Training Band, and several learner groups, with many children learning to play brass instruments and progressing through the different levels to become a fully-fledged brass player. Our subscription fees are low compared to the cost of private music lessons, and group learning encourages the development of skills not otherwise nurtured, such as cooperation and listening. All money received from subscription goes towards instrument and music purchases, helping us to welcome increasing numbers of new learners. In 2017 we are celebrating our 40th Anniversary, and are also launching a fundraising programme to raise funds for a new Band room, our current facilities being several decades old. New facilities will help us to continue teaching children and young people the musical skills which can benefit them for life, and will help us to continue contributing to the local community. As a brass band we are a traditional part of English life, playing at numerous fêtes and events throughout the year, and we can be found in locations ranging from a muddy field to the stately courtyard of Blenheim palace! If you would like to know more about the band or want to be kept up to date with what the band are doing then visit www.abbeybrass.com or send an email to [email protected] and we will send you details of concerts and public engagements in the future. If you would like to learn to play an instrument or already play and want to join a brass band then send an email to [email protected]. We have a beginner band, a training band and a main band so can cater for all levels of ability.

The Senior Band enjoyed playing to an appreciative audience at Henley Bandstand this afternoon. In the break, they gave James a few parcels as he's leaving having played with the band since he was boy. They're hoping he'll come back and visit soon!

There were lots of smiling faces at this year's Whit Friday Marches. Our 'Oxfordshire Brass' scratch band were just one of 162 (!) bands this year, so there was lots of watching others whilst waiting for our turn at Lydgate, Freizland, Greenfield, Dobcross and Diggle (where we were the last band at midnight, and closed with the National Anthem). We improved steadily through the day, with our final performance being our best - we were even scored above a championship band who played the same march!

The Abbey Brass Monkey seems to have enjoyed their first trip to Whit Friday and has come home proudly sporting a Chav Brass sticker! We'd like to thank our drivers Damian and Lee from Tetley's Coaches, for being excellent sports all afternoon and evening, and for minding our monkey during some of the contests.
