🌱💧 Turning Challenges into Opportunities in Ekiriyankumbura 💪🚜

Renaissance Sri Lanka is leading an impactful project, in partnership with MONLAR, and generously sponsored by EConsulate, a Sri Lankan Tech company.

We are helping transform livelihoods in the village of Ekiriyankumbura. 🌾🏡

Our original goal was to build an agro well so villagers could grow crops all year long, even during dry seasons and prolonged dry spells, ensuring a more stable and decent income for families throughout the year. 🌞🌱💵

Alongside the infrastructure development, villagers are also receiving training in agroecology, empowering them with sustainable farming practices for long-term resilience, food security and food sovereignty. 🌍🌿📚

However, nature had other plans. 🌧️🌊

Following the severe flooding caused by Cyclone Ditwah, the soil surrounding the planned well site became completely waterlogged and unstable. Despite multiple attempts by the excavator team to dig at alternative locations, the damp ground conditions made it impossible to safely proceed. 🚜⚠️

Rather than giving up, we worked closely with the villagers to brainstorm practical alternatives. 🤝💡 Together, we decided to shift from constructing an agro well to building a small agro reservoir (පතහක්). 💧🏗️

We are happy to share that:
✅ The reservoir digging work has now been completed
✅ Concrete work has already started
✅ The project remains on schedule ⏳

This phase of the work is highly challenging because the reservoir continuously fills with water. Additional motors are being used to pump out excess water so the concrete work can proceed properly and dry successfully. 🔧💦🏗️

This project is a beautiful example of resilience, collaboration, and community-driven problem solving. ❤️🌱

💧💧💧 The construction of the two agro-wells in Theekkam, Mannar, is making steady progress. 💧💧💧

Through hands-on agroecology training, we are supporting farmers in adopting sustainable and resilient practices that will strengthen food sovereignty and security in Sri Lanka, alongside our partner Movement for Land and Agricultural Reform. 🥕 🥔 🍅

💧💧💧 Once completed, these two wells will provide 20 farming families with reliable access to water, enabling them to cultivate crops year-round, even during dry seasons and periods of low rainfall.

We are grateful to our lead sponsor, Velaris, for their continued support, especially given that climate change is making this work increasingly difficult.

💧 Bringing Clean Water, Restoring Dignity 💧

At Renaissance Sri Lanka, we believe access to safe water is not a privilege, it’s a fundamental right. That’s why we’re proud to support the construction of a community water tank in Madukkarai village, located in the Mannar district of Sri Lanka 🇱🇰.

In this region, underground water is too saline for drinking, farming, or daily use. Families have struggled for years with limited access to clean, usable water. This project changes that.

🤝 In partnership with MONLAR, we are working hand in hand with the community to create a sustainable solution that will have lasting impact.

🌱 Our objectives:

💦 Enhancing Agricultural Water Access
– This community water tank will empower families to cultivate home gardens, improving access to fresh, healthy, and affordable organic produce that is otherwise scarce or prohibitively expensive 🌿🥕

🚰 Improving Drinking Water Quality & Access
– Establishing a clean, community-managed water supply
– Reducing dependence on distant or unsafe sources

🏡 The Madukkarai community water tank will:
✔️ Directly support 9 families
✔️ Positively impact 36 individuals
✔️ Strengthen resilience for generations to come

This is about health, opportunity, and hope. 💙

We extend our heartfelt thanks to our lead sponsor, Velaris, for making this initiative possible through their generous support. 💙

Together, we can build communities where everyone has access to safe water.

On 9th April, Renaissance Sri Lanka successfully completed a humanitarian project in collaboration with the Women's Development Centre (WDC) in Badulla, Sri Lanka.

Our mission was to support families affected by Cyclone Ditwah.

When the cyclone struck Sri Lanka in November 2025, it had a devastating impact, claiming over 600 lives and causing more than $1.6 billion worth of damage. The Badulla district was among the worst affected, with entire communities displaced and livelihoods destroyed.

Since then, the situation has only worsened. The global geopolitical crisis and the subsequent disruption to energy supplies, particularly due to the blockage of the Strait of Hormuz, have had a severe impact on Sri Lanka’s economy. The country now faces fuel shortages, a four-day working week, rising inflation and limited access to basic necessities.

For families in Badulla, who were already vulnerable after the cyclone, these challenges have created an even more uncertain and fragile future. Many are still living in temporary camps and struggling to meet their daily needs.

Together with WDC, we are taking action.

Our focus is on 31 families headed by single mothers, women who have lost their loved ones, homes and sources of income and are now living below the poverty line.

Through this project, we are providing essential food packs to help these families meet their immediate needs and regain a sense of stability during this critical time.

This is just one step. Much more remains to be done.

We are committed to standing alongside these communities and supporting them on their path to recovery.

We would like to thank our sponsor, Lantern Projects (USA).

🌍💔 A Critical Update from Renaissance Sri Lanka - Standing Strong in Sri Lanka 🇱🇰 💧🤝

At Renaissance Sri Lanka, together with our incredible partner MONLAR, we continue to lead projects that bring hope and essential resources to communities in need. But today, we face immense challenges…

🌪️ Climate change is hitting hard – Cyclone Ditwah has left lasting impacts
⛽ Global conflict is felt locally – The war in the Middle East has caused severe petrol shortages, shaking the economy and driving up the cost of basic necessities 📈

💧 Pusarikulam Village
Our two well construction projects are at a standstill:
➡️ One well has only dropped 5 feet in water level after 4 months… still not enough to resume work
➡️ The second well remains completely flooded 🌊
⏳ The timeline to restart is uncertain and unpredictable

🚧 Ekiriyankumbura Project
This remote village project is currently paused due to petrol restrictions 🚫⛽

🏗️ A Glimmer of Progress – Madukkarai
We are grateful that the construction of a water tank is still moving forward 🙏💙

💖 A Heartfelt Thank You to Our Sponsors
Your patience and unwavering support mean everything to us during these delays:
🌟 Thank you Velaris - lead sponsor for Madukkarai & Pusarikulam
🌟 Thank you EConsulate - lead sponsor for Ekiriyankumbura

⏰ A Global Call to Action
The reality is clear: climate change is no longer a distant threat, it is disrupting lives now. Urgent, collective action is needed from governing bodies worldwide to heal our planet 🌱

Because without it… we will die.

🙏 If you have even a penny to spare to contribute to healing, please consider donating : www.renasl.org/donate . Every contribution makes a difference. 💛

After the devastating floods caused by Cyclone Ditwah 🌧️, the road to recovery has not been easy. Waterlogged soils and disrupted livelihoods forced us to pause - but not to give up 💪

Today, we are proud to share that Renaissance Sri Lanka is resuming the construction of a vital water tank in the village of Madukkarai, Sri Lanka 🇱🇰, in partnership with MONLAR🤝

This project will provide access to clean water 💧 for consumption and support home gardening 🌱 for 9 families - strengthening both health and food security at the household level.

In a time when global uncertainties highlight our deep dependence on imported energy and resources 🌍, initiatives like this remind us of the importance of building local resilience and sovereignty over essential needs ⚡

We continue. We adapt. We rebuild 🔄

A heartfelt thank you to Velaris, our lead sponsor 🙏, for making this work possible.
